D&D 5E Found a Use for HotDQ

HotDQ is kind of bad but I paid good money for it. OSMe of the sections in it though are decent hacked out and used as a stand alone small adventure.

For example I used Skyreach Castle and Chapter 2's dungeon at home along with the names of various NPC's.

It also makes a good door stop and a tent for the cat to put his head int.

This is exactly why I don't have a problem with HotDQ at all. Seven different styles of "mini-adventure" that can be used for all manner of game. Town invasion, sneak into camp with dungeon crawl, long-distance travel scene, closed-building investigation/mystery, castle ruins, possible rp'd negotiation scenario, and floating city. Even if you don't use them all as-is... they give you a lot of ideas on how these things work, and allow you to substitute other things in/out as needed to make them new/interesting.

I found a use for HotDQ too: I got six months of terrific play out of it.

But in all seriousness, I'm glad you found a way to not feel like you wasted your money.

My Paladin (which I had to retire from play when I became the group DM) got some help, went back to the Swamp Castle, and salvaged that telescope thingy on the roof. He's going to lead his own personal Manhattan Project to figure out how to build another!

P.S. What is that first word you typed?

If you don't like the overarching campaigns, it's more useful to view the APs as what in previous editions would have been something like 4-6 modules, but crammed together into a single book for this edition. I know that I didn't have a use for the plot of Out of the Abyss but have pulled the various adventures out of it to use in other parts of my game and have gotten a lot of use out of it. I will likely do the same thing with Storm King's Thunder because the plot of that one doesn't sing to me, but a number of the adventure areas look like they'll be easily repurposed.
