D&D 4E FR 4E SPOILER - Grand Histoy of the Realms info

Not really. Eberron is no where near as involved as FR in terms of NPC/storyline bloat. I think they'll advance the Inspired invasion of Khorvair myself

Unlikely, as that would change things too much and much of Eberron works because a whole bunch of things are waiting-in-the-wings for PCs to arrive and mess it up.

They've suggested they're moving the Eberron setting ahead by about 2 years. What you're likely to see in that setting is:

  • House Cannith/Arcane Congress/Wayfinders has found a new method of spell-casting from the depths of Xen'drik and make it public. Cue /at will and /per encounter abilities
  • King Borenal dies (he is pretty old)
  • New Cyre declares independence from Breland and starts a local war to gain some land for itself. The other nations provide quiet aid, mostly to keep Breland busy.

Indeed. Of course, some of us have considered Elmonster a villain for years. ;)

At least those players whose characters have pretty wives, daughters, or sisters in game, probably consider him a villain :)

A group of gamers who have really played the setting a lot and in depth, has very likely created its own events on a large scale and storyline... comes the new edition, and they have to forcely adapt to dramatic events conceived by a designer that obviously has nothing to do with the group.
Funny sidenote: our group has played in the Realms extensively (but you'd probably have never guessed THAT from my screenname, right? ;) ), and the current DM, at the beginning of our current campaign about three or four months ago, moved events 20 years forward to 1395DR. Mystra is dead, the Weave has changed, and the nature of magic has changed throughout the world.

He has postulated that this has resulted in Thay and Halruaa (who were the first to figure out how to use the magic correctly again in any numbers) gaining power and land and coming directly into conflict. It remains to be seen exactly how prescient the rest of this is, I guess.... :D

I'll be curious to see what changes in say, technology we'll see. Probably none eh? Guess Gond goes to roll on the wandering Harlot table or something.

Be interesting to see where elves and dwarves are. Neither has been a 'big' player in the Realms but that has changed a few times depending on who was doing the writing. In the old gray box they were both 'fading' races but I lost track of what they were doing with them after a while. I think it was FR10 or 9 where the Southern Dwarves were mating with human women where I pretty much shoulder shrugged it off.

In some ways, those saying it's reset is a good thing and that it's easier to digest, are partially fooling themselves unless WoTC STOPS producing new novels which will take this 'new' FR into different directions that recreate the original problems of the old setting in terms of detail bloat and too many NPCs doing all the action leaving the GM to carve out his own niches. Something I never had a problem with but largely because I ignored the novels and changed and modified things as I wanted to, as a GM should.

Having been a Planescape fan as long as I've been a Forgotten Realms fan, I totally agree. The setting likely won't be picked up again if it's dropped.

One can dream, though, one can dream.

Seriously: I could see Ed Greenwood getting his hands on it somehow.

I picked up my copy of Grand History of the Realms over the weekend, and with all the debate that's occuring... May as well add fuel to the fire. :)

Spoilers... (highlight to read)

In 1384 DR, Tyr kills Helm in a romantic misunderstanding over the heart of Tymora. Though nothing can be proved, the gods believe that Cyric is somehow involved in Helm's death.

In 1385 DR, With help from Shar, Cyric murders Mystra in Dweomerheart, destroying the plane and Savras, as well as sending Azuth and Velsharoon into the Astral plane.

Magic bursts from the bonds of the Weave. Thousands of mages are driven insane or destroyed, and the very subsatnce of the world becomes mutable beneath the veils of azure fire that dance across the sky.

Cyric is imprisoned on his home plane for 1000 years by Tyr, Lathander, and Sune for his crimes. This event is what is known as the Spellplague
So, FR has had its bloated overwhelming magical presence removed? Wizardry basically starting over and most of the powerful deities in trouble? So, FR will be a dangerous low-magic setting?

Wow, I may actually be able to play/enjoy FR again! :D

Not necessarily so--the Shalarins are a (nonevil) race of aquatic humanoids who live in the Sea of Fallen Stars. See Monsters of Faerun.
Fine, then . . . the shalarins are surfacing because
of the aboleths.

Actually, I remember seeing something about Darguun having something significant happening during the 2 year upgrade. I think it was supposed to have come from James Wyatt at GenCon, but I could be wrong. (I think Drooam was mentioned as well, a Drooam/Darguun alliance?)
