[FR] How many Drow does it take to fill a temple?

First Post
I am curious about the percentage of ‘good’ drow living in the Realms, both on the surface and possibly in the Underdark. We know that Eilistraee has temples/shrines/support across Faerûn. We know that, while evil, other communities of Drow have come to the surface to escape Lloth dominated communities. I am primarily interested in the state of Drow as of the FRCS although I know things are a-happening in Novels and modules that have been published since (just haven’t gotten to read them yet).

Bottom line: How likely is a band of adventurers to encounter a ‘good’ drow? And I don’t mean the guy with purple eyes and two scimitars.

I'd either:

A) have drow be a major factor and the players should meet up with them semi-regularly

or

B) they should never be seen at all and only be a treatening and mysterious force

... anything in between and drow become as threatening as, say, gnomes.

The title of this thread almost sounded like a lightbulb joke. :)

But seriously, without reading the FR novels and whatnot, it would be difficult to say how many good-aligned drow there are "officially." My own opinion, for what it's worth, is that they should be rare. Not only does drow society at large not give individuals any reason to be "good," but also those that are good-aligned would be excellent at hiding among the drow or would live together in a neutral or good-aligned society as far away as possible from other drow. I think, too that just because a drow is good-aligned, doesn't mean that s/he would be necessarily friendly or trust outsiders, especially from the surface, and s/he would be as likely to hide from outsiders as much as other drow. So, depending on the size of the drow population overall, maybe as many as 1 in 1000 or as few as 1 in 10,000 would be good-aligned, depending on how rare you think such a creature is.

Four: two in the front, and two in the back.

Oops! That's how many drow can fit in a Mini. I ALWAYS get those mixed up.

Or they become a people seeking redemption and a plot that goes beyond simply 'kill anything that doesn't look like you.' It is clear that in the Realms that some Drow are seeking or have found redemption. One of the Seven Sisters (of which i know very, very little) is a Drow. There are clerics of a good Drow goddess; an elven goddess whose whole 'thing' is that she is waiting around for the Drow to be redeemed. Or she just likes to dance naked in the moonlight… that is what I am trying to figure out.

There are good Drow. And no, Drizzy doesn’t have to be the only one. If you don't like Good Drow, that is fine, don’t play with them. But FR leaves some room for their redemption and that is what I am asking about. Maybe I am just feeling messianic (or rather, my character is).

I think it depends on the DM. Think about it, there aren't that many good Kobolds in most settings, but with some DMs good Kobolds seem to be more common than evil ones. Same with drow. When dealing with drow, remember that some DMs think that 150 good drow per session is a nice plot idea.

OH! I thought you were asking from a DM standpoint. Were you thinking about playing or are you currently playing a good drow trying to redeem his/her race? It's an interesting thought; it could make an interesting campaign. But still, the number of good drow (or if drow could be redeemed at all) would be up to the DM regardless.

Chance they should: .00001%
Chance they will: 99.99999%

;)

In 2 campaigns that lasted, together, for about 7 years, we never met Drizzt. (Our characters met a drow claiming to be the famous Drizzt and believed him. The missing hair was explained as to an accident at the Harpell's.) The PCs met "Drizzt", shared some stories around the campsite, and parted ways the next day. Does that count as a Drizzt meeting?
