FR: What's up with Lolth? (Spoilers, please)

Darkness said:
Yeah, I know. :) As I said before, his word is only canon until WotC says otherwise.

My point was just that they can see what he said if they want to - not that they have to let it influence their decisions.

Yup and some of them just don't bother. :) And from what I've read it's also not very hard to get in touch with Ed if a game designer truly wanted to. I mean look how easy it is to get in touch with him on Candlekeep. :)

Kuje provided me with the direct quote back on the WotC boards, but I can't find it there now. That said, it was a conversation Triel was having with someone. They toss around the drow term for "Chosen of Lolth" and then it's explained that that's what that term means.
Okay, since that's in-character & hasn't been stated OOC, it's dubious if she was an actual Chosen of Lolth ('cause the clergy of Lolth weren't always told what's what by her). IMO.

Aaannnddd, that's the end of my tangent. :D

Well, I took the opportunity to have Lolth destroyed and replaced by a deity of my own creation who would actually DO something with the drow instead of pitting them against one another like toys. God, I hate her.

Why create something when the Realms already have the ideal candidate: Vhaeraun. After the spring clean (all those eight-legged nuisances have to go), the drow would be told that the infighting should stop - there's enough duergar and svirfneblin to be cruel to - and that both the Night Below and the Night Above need more Drow Realms. I think by 1400 DR we'd have a new dominant race on toril....

To those who haver read the series so far (I've only read up to book 3 because I can't afford hardcovers), how are Pharaun and Danifae at the end of book 5? I mean, Pharaun and Quenthel have been hating each other, and in this thread people say Quenthel has practically become a Chosen, so she might decide to squash Pharaun, especially if she still has Jeggred to back her up. And Quenthel might view Danifae as a potential rival.

How could it be? Pharaun has made himself inexpandable and Quenthel and Danifae apparently have something (though I think that's only a marketing ploy to bait readers with hot drow lesbian action)

I'm only familiar with the general outline of the Time of Troubles, but it would have been just like her to have put Bhaal and Myrkul (it was those two, right?) up to stealing the Tablets of Fate.

Bane, Bhaal, Myrkul. The Dead Three.

Only Myrkul and Bane stole the tablets, Bhaal was presented in Avatars Trilogy as Myrkul`s hitman. Actually all Gods were pretty pathetic, not much awe inspiring or intimidating, Cyric was a better villain than Bane!

BTW, I got an official answer from Rich Baker on what is and what isn't canon. Some people in this thread would be surprised...

1. We define "Chosen" as a template that can be added to a person that carries some ability changes and special powers. The particulars of each Chosen template vary a lot. Fzoul is the Chosen of Bane, and the template that he's got seems a lot different from the Chosen of Mystra template. I'd assume that some gods decide to create Chosen, and others don't, and that the powers of any particular Chosen are sort of dependent on the whims and abilities of the god in question.

2. Is everything Ed says canon? No. Canon is the assemblage of information in the current edition of the rulebooks. Beyond that is a much larger sphere of "we thinks" and "when we get tos" in which Ed's never-ending font of creative energy is quite prominent. For example, if Ed writes a couple of thousand words on Rethmar in the course of a bunch of posts to a message board, it's as good as anything until something else gets into print. In a perfect world, we'd know all about Ed's previous speculation on the topic and make sure it was part and parcel of any other designer's work on that city. Sometimes, it doesn't work out that way. Ed doesn't monitor all RPGs, novels, and PC games being worked on, and we don't keep track of everything he says. Heck, I don't *want* to. I don't want Ed to have to be afraid to speak from the heart about anything he cares to talk about, and I don't want to have to approve what he says before it goes in the public eye. Seems like that would make us both miserable.

In any event, I'm not sure that the whole concept of canon is worth the fuss we seem to invest in it. If something isn't in print, I don't treat it as canon. Even then, I'm willing to "evolve" canon when the situation calls for it (for instance, an edition shift in the D&D game). I know that some fans don't like that, but that's the way the business works.
