Free League Announces Blade Runner TTRPG for 2022

Free League has announced a Blade Runner RPG, set for a 2022 launch. The game is set between the two movies, and uses Free League’s Year Zero Engine.

This follows on from the Swedish publisher’s recent successful Aliens RPG, and a million dollar The One Ring Kickstarter.

The official Blade Runner RPG will propel players into the streets of Los Angeles as Blade Runners with unique specialties, personalities – and memories.

The core game and its line of expansions will push the boundaries of investigative gameplay in tabletop RPGs, giving players a range of tools to solve an array of cases far beyond retiring Replicants. Beyond the core casework, the RPG will both in setting and mechanics showcase key themes of Blade Runner – sci-fi action, corporate intrigue, existential character drama, and moral conflict – that challenge players to question your friends, empathize with your enemies, and explore the poisons and perseverance of hope and humanity during such inhumane times.

The rules of the game are based on the acclaimed Year Zero Engine, used in award-winning games such as the ALIEN RPG, Tales From the Loop and Forbidden Lands, but further developed and uniquely tailored for Blade Runner.

There are very few movie- or tv-based rpgs that pique my interest, so i am abnormally interested in this. Part of it is curiosity regarding how they'll work the themes into the mechanics (I don't know much of anything about the system or its iterations thus far). Also, I wonder if they'll explore locations beyond L.A.

Very very excited for this. The potential is huge for what you could do with it. You could expand into a local area space ala Outland style. You could do Replicant military campaign on other worlds etc. So many possibilities.

@ART! To answer your questio n the systems use a simple dice pool - attribute + skill + modifiers x d6. Count 6s for success, extras buy stunts.

You are normally allowed to reroll your dice once, and this is where they add most of the theme into the game. In Mutant Year Zero you character mutates, gaining powers but getting one step closer to death. In Alien you gain extra dice, stress dice, that can cause you to lose your mind for a while endangering yourself and others or it can give you the edge you need to succeed.

It'll be interesting to see how they implement the push mechanic in Bladerunner, and I'm not really sure how they'll do it. Existential dread maybe?

Maybe each die gets you closer to accepting your fate and give up with a flourish or poem.

While I'm not ART!, I am an Art. So quick question. How many d6's a typically rolled? What's about the max size of the pool?
It will depend on the specific as Year Zero RPGs are tailored quite a bit to each RPG it is used in.

I would say 4-7 would be about average. You max out at 10-15.

Here is a quickstart that may be helpful - Coriolis The Third Horizon - Quickstart - Free League Publishing | Coriolis | DriveThruRPG.com. The specifics will change (Dark Points only appear in Coriolis for example).
