Fresh Campaign Setting Sought

Given your new reply and some of the clarifications to it I have three suggestions, although both only have one book out (with an exception) they are based on novels that you can incorporate for setting material or ignore as you see fit.

The first is A Game of Thrones. With significant alterations to the d20 system, this presents a fantasy version of the War of the Roses. While magic exists, its rare (indeed the magic rules are presented in a GM only section) but seems to be makign a comeback (according to the novels, in your campaign that can be another story). Publish by the now defunct Guardians of Order, the main book is an excellent resource for running a game set in George RR Martin's world or another of your making. I have been thinking about running a game with at least some of the rules but not the setting myself.

Second is The Black Company from Green Ronin based on the novels by Glen Cook. The magic system is unique and taxing so that spell casters are a viable option, but not at all common in the game world. Items are more likely to be various degrees of master work. There are some uber-powerful NPC spellcaster if you choose to use them, but there is no real need to do so.

FInally is Thieves World also from GR. I dont have personal experiance with these, but based on what you have said and the reviews I have read you may want to check it out.

I'm going to second a Game of Thrones. Unfortunatly, when I use it, I want just a but of magic (not the exceedingly limies system given) and its hard to balance spells with the rules changes to hit points.

I like the Black Company suggestion. I'm not much on the actual novels (I find them a little too clever in their naming conventions, which really turns me off), but the ruleset sounds really good from all that I've read about it.

For gritty old-style sword & sorcery, Wilderlands of High Fantasy from Necromancer Games, along with the City State of the Invincible Overlord. Then again, I'm biased.

For something that will remind you of Forgotten Realms before it became all too well un-forgotten, with a strong dash of Mystara and Greyhawk for flavor, try Goodman Games' Gazetteer of the Known Realms. It's awesome.

Thieves' World (lower magic)
Black Company (low magic. . . mostly)
Conan (low magic)
Legends of Excalibur (scalable magic)
Legends of the Samurai (scalable magic)
A Game of Thrones (very low magic)

They all have their own d20/OGL rulesets, which you mentioned as being an important factor. I think the above listed all have their strong points, too. Actually, they're all great (IMO.)

For True20 - if that's an appealing option for you - there would also be Blood Throne, which is contained in the Worlds of Adventure book/PDF, but will be expanded upon in its own dedicated campaign setting book. I'm not quite sure when that's coming out, but I'm looking forward to seeing what it's like when it does. True20 strips the d20 rules base down to its essential parts, then rebuilds what's there into a system that - theoretically - should be able to model almost anything. While that might not be strictly true, it is very flexible, and products appear to be coming out for it quite frequently.

Great suggestions, one and all !! There are quite a few here for me to explore and I relish the sheer number of options I can explore further and deeper before i pump in hard earned RPG$$. Just got into work since its morning at this part of the world. I am not sure if there are any d20 D&D players in the Channel Islands, but if there are any out there I would love to establish contact. Before I log out and begin my grind for the day, I would like to extend my warmest appreciation to everyone who took the time to send me a suggestion or two with their personal take on it or them. If there are any more that have not been mentioned that satisfy the criteria of my search for a Campaign Setting fire away, please.

Do any of the Publishers of the settings mentioned thus far not deliver to the UK, if I am unable to purchase PDF versions?

Thank you.

DS.
