From the new SRD: Monsters in the MM2

I wonder what the point of having the Erinyes, if the Succubus fills the equivalent role. Having the Dretch will be nice, although I'm surprised no quasit.

As per 3e, the erinyes hasn't had an equivalent role to the succubus for many years (since 2e Planescape). 3e repositioned her as more of an angelic avenger: raining down fiery death with her longbow, or cutting people apart in melee. I'd expect the same in MM2, which is Good Stuff. The 1e/2e image of the erinyes was pretty far from their mythological origins as divine furies of vengeance.

...although having said that, the diTerlizzi Planescape artwork of the erinyes back in the 2e days is still, uh, quite something. Yeah.

A need for devilish succubi drove the developers to shove the Erinyes into that role and out of their own.

I applaud the return of the Furies to D&D in all their sanity breaking glory.

What, no one noticed the three varities of rust monster in the SRD, including a swarm? This book looks awesome (I'm loving that there is an Archangel template) and May can't come soon enough.

But I don't understand how being a Fury makes one devilish in the first place. Furies seemed to be about retribution. They weren't what I'd classify as "Evil".
