D&D 5E Front Line Warlock (Or other caster)

I have a warlock that is Paladin 2/ Warlock X. He is pact of the Tome. Has Shillelagh and Booming Blade. Its not really perfect, I also normally have a phantom steed up (from book of secrets) so I will move from melee to range fairly often if the situation demands it.

I have long considered a paladin warlock.

right now I am going fiend patron and am playing up a possessed priest angle. very great fun. spider climb for some exorcist 3 nonsense!

I have to decide quickly though about how to proceed. the DM is allowing for some redesign early on in the name of a fun campaign.

Definitely going with Tome for the first time so I can get Thaumaturgy for roleplay goodness.

My assassin/feypact tomelock makes pretty good use of combining both prestidigitation and thaumaturgy. Fun roleplaying opportunity there...

I was looking at both of those hoping I could squeeze them in! Those extra cantrips burn quickly with so many choices.

After a million years gaming and experimenting I finally have come to grips with my preferences. Having a real character is so important. I am better off giving up some mechanical advantage for that kind of stuff every time. I keep interest in the characters so much longer and survival and death mean a lot more (sorry for the digression!).

I was telling the DM what I was going for and let him know I would be making some less mechanically driven choices. And I liked his response: "It might be a real advantage to make superstitious cultists leave you alone or make some goblins soil themselves and run!"

I love that response.

On the other end, we have some young players (kids of group members) who are juiced and ready to swing great axes so we will be fine...

Worth it, to me. I ended up deciding on: eldritch blast, friends, guidance, message, prestidigitation, thaumaturgy. I've had a great time making use of all of them.

That is bad ass. I have on scratch paper for lunchtime at work fun:

Eldritch Blast, Prestidigitation, Thaumaturgy, Minor Illusion, Great Flame Blade, Friends, Viscous Mockery, Mage hand.

Note: I am going to take one level of bard (I normally dislike bards!) so I can inspire with my evil sermons (a D6) and also have access to bane for flavor. It will be bard abilities re flavored. That is the reason for the number of cantrips on my list.

And obviously it requires the Tome boon. Going to ask DM if repelling blasts can be invisible so as to be force-like throwing people around. He might go for it.

Arcana (booming blade) or Death Cleric. Armor, spiritual guardian, and spiritual weapon leave you plenty good in melee. Plus some good utility.

I really like warlocks, but was never a fan of eldritch blast. That reskinning you suggested, though, is pure awesomeness! Poltergeist style, really macabre, I love it.

Cleric are my second favorite class. Per your suggestion in another thead I want a cleric with green flame blade.

My assassin/shadow monk/warlock eventually picked up eldritch blast when he got his tome. As a "magic shadow ninja", his eldritch blasts are shuriken of concentrated darkness that he conjures up and throws. At 11th level currently, he gets three now. Feels very ninja-esque to throw three shuriken at a time for some reason...
