Either way, throwing weapons becomes a sub-par option when you have enough levels to acquire magically enhanced weapons. Throwing those is not usually smart, unless you use the "Returning" enhancement... which is a +1 that doesn't actually improve your weapon, it just lets you use it more than once.

In my opinion, the reason to take a sub-par option would be coolness factor (balanced against not pulling your weight in the party, if they chose better combat options), and "Returning" is anything but cool.

Going with a thrown weapon is hardly sub par. Particularly at low levels where the cost of mighty composite bows is prohibitive. Personally, I played a dwarf who would throw a hammer in one hand, move, then take a two handed grip on his polearm. I get to make a nice attack, pull back and wait for the charge. Or, better yet, throw, move out of charge line and nail him when he moves into range.

It's nice to have a weapon that is a bit more versatile than a bog standard great sword once in a while.

Hussar, your low level tactics are fine... Macchiavelli was speaking about higher levels.

I did love low level halflings with 3 sneak attacks (Ftr1/Rog1/halfling paragon).

Sadly, as soon as throwing starts to be interesting due to the highest possible number of attacks (Rapid Shot+Haste+TWF+ITWF), it's too difficult to get all thrown weapons enchanted. Shuriken work though but don't make up for the loss of weapon damage...

Now that I think about it... halfling paragon + Ranged Weapon Mastery+ Weapon Spec... shuriken... wands of Flame Arrow spell, E-substituted Flame Arrow for cold/sonic/acid/lightning..., GMW spell..., Heroism spell...

That sounds tasty. Guess instead of those wands, an EK build would be interesting... and much cheaper.

Going with thrown weapons to the exclusion of all else is subpar. If you want to be a range weapon monkey, use a bow. True.

But, thrown weapons work nicely in a lot of situations. Fire away with a thrown weapon then fall back works nicely too. For a character like a Scout where you only get one attack per round anyway, thrown weapons can work very, very well.
