(Fun but OT) Song of Ice and Fire

Not that I'd want to spoil anything, but people who've read the whole thread, you should know better.

Umm, I don't think we'll see more of the Red Viper. He was an awesome character. It has been a year and a half since I read it, but wasn't he the one who dueled the Mountain? Remember how that ends?

I have not quite finished the third book so I am trying not to read all of this to deeply yet.

my favorite characters:

stannis baratheon (duh!) - one of the most complex characters in the novels. read the speech in book 2 after renly is "visited" by the shadow. stannis talks about his brother to davos, mentioning how his brother drew out a peach when he thought he was drawing out a sword. a great piece of writing that gives stannis a whole new complexion. those who write him off as "bad" simply haven't picked up on GRRM's subtleties.

tyrion - for all of the reasons others have mentioned. he's the character you "cheer" for.

Least Favorite:

Joffrey - evil and vicious

Bran - i hate to say it, but bran's stories are the only weak point in the books. that stuff about having wolf ability just makes my eyes glaze and see who's chapter is next.

one of my favorite series....ever

i loved this series. it has kept me riveted, entertained, surprised, and involved since the very first page. i cannot wait until april to read the new novel.

as far as the questions that have been posed,

my favorite characters have been tyrion and sandor. tyrion is able to succeed and survive despite all that is against him, his family, his stature, etc. sandor is just such a great anti-hero.

least favorite: a close tie between robb stark and his father eddard. i know everyone loves the stark clan. hell, i do. but, they both ended the way they did because of the horrible nobility that they had about them. "too noble to ****." that was said of eddard. so true. and look what it did for him. and his idiot oldest son opted to go with his heart rather then his brain. and look what it did for him.

I'd say that the Valarian steel blades are magical. Considering that magic has essentially been dormant for awhile, and thus not really functioning, but that it's returning, we'll see much more of it. Sure, the blades may only have revealed properties that can be accounted for through craftsmanship, but a +4 Keen Vorpal scimitar acts like a masterwork weapon in an Antimagic field too.

I like Arya, but now she's starting to scare me. She's already as ruthless as many of the villains, and since she is going to join the assassins . . .

So, I just finished reading the Red Wedding. OMG, is nothing sacred. I know Catelyn won't die. He does not kill of many (or any if I recall) POV characters but all the others are fair game. Walder Frey needs to die PERIOD. That became my best scene vote now. The should have trusted Graywind's instincts.

Robb should not have gone out that way, nor the Greatjohn but I am sure the plot developments around that whole thing will be cool.

So, I wonder, with magic and all that appearing to return, Did the Freys curse themselves by murdering their honored guests? I mean, really, magically curse themselves!

Did the Freys curse themselves by murdering their honored guests?

I belive so because Martin practically says so later when Bran reaches Nightfort and they tell the story of the Rat Cook. See the thread started by Dr. Midnight in this forum when you're finished for a call to insights into the next few plot twists.

I think so. My theory is that EVERY Frey dies. All of 'em!

Combine the curse with the endless references to just how many Freys there are...

And why doesn't Tywin Lannister get the blame he deserves for the Red Wedding? He's the real mastermind behind the whole thing (what song are they playing when the killing starts?)!

Ah well, read on...

Heck Yeah!, Tywin certainly was behind it all the way but you expect such acts from him. Walder Frey did the dirt though. He was the one that murdered his guests who broke bread under his roof. He murdered his daughter off to a family he intended to kill at their own wedding. It made since towards the end of that chapter why everyone complained about the band though. That was a nice touch.

Now, I wonder if Edmund was able to....well....legitimize the wedding. If he "broke Roslin's "maidenhead" then that makes the Freys Kinslayers as well and doubly cursed. Since I have not quite finished the third book this may already be answered.

I don't think they consumated the marriage. I believe it may have actually said so, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I do know that they're holding Edmure hostage at the Twins whilst sending their banners south to seige Riverrun. They'll use him as a hostage to try to get Blackfish to open the gates. I doubt it will work though. The stench of betrayel for killing Catelyn will be too great.

Yeah, after a while you get the feeling that everyone other than POV characters is wearing a Red Shirt, like in the original Star Trek series.
