G.I. Joe, d20 Modern-style?

One of the issues I have is the Joes counterattack/recon during the "in-game" event that was roughly analogous to Desert Storm.

A single SAW-Viper guns down like ten Joes with his belt-fed SAW, then he's given a heroes welcome by the "top brass" when he returns from patrol.

Yep, you'd never see that on the TV version. Heck, you'd never see anyone get hit by gunfire in the TV version. Thanks for the outline.

I remember Tomax and Xamot (semi-psychic twins who led the Crimson Guard) freaking out over it, and being flabbergasted over Cobra Commander's rewarding the guy.

Interestingly enough, the Devil's Due G.I. Joe (which, BTW, is REALLY BLOODY COOL), referenced this just recently.

What IS Devil's Due G.I. Joe?

Ditto--I love how the new line has basically kept with the old comic's continuity (though it did introduce a few cartoon-based elements into the mix, like the miscellaneous "greenshirts").

I think what I really like about it is the idea of a next generation of Joes/Cobras--Kamikura, Daemon, Zanya, Alexander Destro, etc.

Plus, I like what I've seen for "Ultimate G.I. Joe", uhm... "G.I. Joe Reloaded" so far. Not too sure about Storm Shadow's new look, but otherwise, I think it's a nice idea.

The more I think about it, the more I need to get cracking on writing this stuff up for d20 Modern: this loyal fan has already written Marvel (d% & SAGA) stats for many Joes & Cobras.

This might be what you're all looking for. I found this last week. I remembered someone from the WOTC's d20 forum did this last year I think. It's a pdf that has advanced classes, stats for cobra and a few other things.

It's geocites so it might take sometime to get it. I had to downlod it three times because it keep cutting it off as I downloaded the pdf.

The whole bit about Joes never getting shot in the cartoons is true in the comic book and tv show from the 80s...until issue....what 106? That was the start of Joes actually dying and it all starts when Doc looks out of the bunker they're in and gets a rifle between his eyes and BLAM! 10 Joes die in that issue and aftera few issues the body count is up to 21. I missed about 80 issues in between (remember the cool Origin of Snake Eyes in issue 26?) but started reading it again then.

Heh if you want some seriously wacky 80s marvel comics tho, read the Star Wars comics they did. Boba Fett was female and joined the Rebels towardd the end of the series. Of course Hoojibs and those little ewok like guys who grow up to be big snarling creatures are also odd. Both of those races are in the Aliens Anthology book tho.

Corrections on the GI Joe stuff....GI Joe issue 109 was the start
http://www.yojoe.com/comics/joe/joe109.shtml

The battle in Trucial Abysmia continues, and Tomax and Xamot misinterpret Cobra Commander's order to release the captured Joes, and a SAW-Viper kills four of them: Doc, Heavy Metal, Thunder and Crankcase. The remaining Joes escape, but three more: Breaker, Crazylegs, and Quick Kick, are killed when the vehicle they are escaping on is destroyed. The Joes send help by dropping a vehicle from low orbit.

issue 113
More Joe casualties are added to the list: Sneak-Peek, Avalanche, Blocker, Maverick, Blaster, Knockdown, and Dee-Jay.

So 14 deaths in 5 issues

Sounds like they were clearing out the dead weight...

Sure. The roster was getting pretty huge at that point. But it also made the point that these were not superheroes --- just soldiers.

At the very end of the first series, there was a nice scene where two Joes visited graves and memorialized the fallen Joes.
