[Game a Day 16] Werewolf: the Apocalypse

Unfortunately, Mage and Changeling are the two WoD games I didn't get into really. So I won't be getting to a Game-a-Day about them. I'm also avoiding the big games for me so far - the ones I couldn't possibly summarize my experience in down to 2,000 words.

As much as I loved Werewolf I am looking forward to when Mage: The Ascension is discussed. Definitely my all time favorite game. Nothing since has come close, not even Mage: The Awakening.
I only tried three of the Storyteller games: Vampire, Werewolf, and Mage. I didn't like Vampire or Werewolf, but I had a lot of fun with Mage: a very flexible and interesting game that demanded a lot from both the GM and the players.

From what I remember, no one ever wanted to play Werewolf, but lots of people wanted to play A werewolf in whatever Vampire game was going on. Even though they were supposed to be (im)mortal enemies.

I liked Vampire okay, but it always bothered me that all the other WoD games seemed like variations on this obvious formula of factions and infightings. I thought having different tribes/bloodlines of Werewolves was kinda lame. I always thought it would've been more interesting if they had based it more on the curse/full moon/unwilling transformation part of the myth.

I did like the power level of it. Something about it really captured the feel of intense, superhuman violence. Maybe it was because after playing vampires, who can so totally destroy normal humans, playing a werewolf ripping through vampires seemed unbelievable.

In the end, werewolf was a game I really enjoyed many aspects of as long as we didn’t try combining it with Vampire and the other games with PCs playing characters of each ‘species’.

Hm. I hear folks say that a lot, but we didn't have too much problem with mixing the games. Doing so requires the GM to make a couple of background mechanics choices, but they aren't all that difficult to suss out.

Sign me up with the Freak Legion! That was the best game WW put on the market. No angst, no humanity, no pretension and no mercy for the norms or the furballs.

The storyteller was delaying the apocalypse and instead was having the setting be torn apart by our actions. Setting up the dirty bomb in California ruled. Downtown Chicago being overrun by a zombie horde created by an infectious PC was fun. But nothing tops a thermonuclear napalm thrower strapped to one's back.

Having to fight the Weaver based powerarmor was cool too, looks like a mecha, moves like a forklift.

I ran a single Freak Legion game, but it didn't stick.

On the other hand, Freak Legion was GREAT for statting out the Bane Mummies from the first two editions of the Mummy WoD supplement. Notice that all the weirdness attributed to the Bane mummies were powers of the formori.

Our long-term Vampire campaign had two Bane Mummies involved among the villains.

Other than delierium immunity, there are 3 points about taking powers to survive

1. Regeneration is not optional. You take it. Or your next character will take it after this one dies.

2. Boost your soak. Hide of the Wyrm is cheap, max it.

3. "Attack" powers are very costly and assault rifles are standard issue. Unless the attack is very useful, these are 2nd priority.

Or you can play the ultimate character that would make Samuel Haight wince in pain - at least if you were using the older editions of the rules (before they FINALLY got rid of the possibility of an abomination being able to use gifts and regain gnosis and everything).

Werewolf / Vampire (Abomination) thrall of the wyrm (Formori). Preferably with some hedge magic thrown in for good measure. Free regeneration, free delerium immunity.

No. Oh no. Oh GAWD no.

Never mention S.H. To merely utter that name is to invite The Dread Curse Of Twinkdom upon your gaming table for all of eternity.
