game conduct...am i being anal?

I think that rules are good to have, I have a set of my own but I think I'd have trouble with your no drawing rule. 'Tis a horrible habit of mine to doodle when playing but then again, I am paying attention. I just need to keep my idle hands occupied. :D

Rules always come about when just mentioning the 'out of line' habits don't work. I'm a firm believer the DM/GM should have a 'Code of Conduct'.

Well there I go rambling again... I got to lay off the caffeine!

Just use the "Reply" button at the bottom of every post, right where the old "Quote" button used to be.

Personally, I've been using the Quick Reply option that's at the bottom of every page and clicking the "Quote Message in Reply" box. It takes a little experimentation to get it right but it works.

after last nights game I'm putting in some game conduct rules at my table. I kinda hate to do this as i feel like I'm treating my group like a bunch of kids (we're 25-35), however i think this is gotta happen.

#1. No reading books or drawing at the table ( unless you're looking something up for what is happening in the game). Too many times i have people who are reading books and planning ahead. Then are like "What's going on? Who is that guy?"

#2. No talking about other campaigns while we're playing. We have other people in our group who DM. I think it's rude when players ask question about the other guys game. This just doesn't happen when i'm DMing. I just think this is rude, you come to play one game don't waste time talking about an another.

So what do you guys think...am i being anal? or are these good conduct rules. Let me know some conduct rules you have at your table

1. Reading, I agree, shouldn't be going on unless it's reading the PHB for something. Drawing is kinda iffy though. As an artist I tended to draw things as they were happening in the game. Players also had me drawing their characters as went as well.

2. I totally agree with you here.

3. I'm also of the opinion no alcohol during the game. Alcohol and gaming makes for some crappy role playing.

Sudden flashback to when I first started gaming. Dwarf, kilt, swinging down on a rope to take a Cleric out. . .

Everyone was laughing and the Dwarf's player was the only one who had touched any alchohol. We still laugh about that whole story, which also involved a Paladin attempting to do the same thing with the rope and rolling double 1s.

That said, I agree here. Seeing as I don't agree with alchohol regardless, my opinion is somewhat biased but I wouldn't want to mix it with RPing. That could create a situation that's just the wrong kind of crazy.

woah there fellah! i dissagree.
I dont drink, but i've watched drunk people game and its the funniest thing i've ever seen!

Sure you dont actually GET anywhere, but when the sorcerer casts a spell on the barbarian to make him think a goat is the barmaid so he takes it to bed......there is just no other reaction but to laugh.

oh yeah this has been a rule in my games for some time now. Yes I understand it can make for some funny experiences. But I have younger kids that I just don't want witnessing things like that. Also more so than not games really suck with drunk people.

Be careful

Just yesterday I asked my players who are also my best friends if it would be possible to wait writing a SMS till we make a pause every hour or so as needed. I was flat out refused. And it's not because I bore them or it isn't fun but because other things particularly gf's are simply more important....
What I want to say is that you should never ever introduce the rules without explaining your intent and make sure to ask them for their support.

I have to object to this idea of prohibiting alcohol for D&D. Obviously, if you're dealing with people unable to moderate their drinking, it's a problem. But given that the average age of D&D players continues to rise, there must be many gaming groups where this isn't a concern. Having some beers around a gaming table can add in all ways to the game -- I see no downside except possibly that the game might be infinitessimally slowed by the slightly more frequent need to visit the washroom.
