Do you use Legendary Items, such as the one in products from The Game Mechanics? What's your experience with them? (Or other magic items that 'ascend' as you gain levels)

I do have artifacts that gain abilities as the players gain levels but it is much less defined. I usually explain to players they may need to play around with an item to discover more abilities or sometimes they will spontaniously know a new ability.

I've used them, both as a player and as a DM. When we played through City of the Spider Queen I played a sorceress with a legendary staff, and currently one of my players has a legendary rapier from the Legendary Weapons book.

What some people don't seem to realize is that just because you're taking a prestige class doesn't mean you're missing out on class abilities, it just means that they're now focused around a magic item. I also find that it gives my players a sense of the world being ancient, and that there are more powerful things out there than they know. Sort of a Middle Earth-y feel, if that makes sense.

One thing I would reccommend is really looking at the legendary item's abilities and making sure they fit what the character is going for. It will help keep the player from feeling like he is missing out on something.

One of the players in my old game was a 10th level mage (well, 6th with 4 levels of scion I believe) that has the two handed sword that's a dragon bane blade.

In my old campaign, one of the players had such a blade, a greatsword, but never bothered to get it identified properly so it wound up in NPC hands.

I've used several NPCs with those items as well.

This is one of my favorite versions of the 'rising' in power style item.

For an alternative take though, in the same campagin with the mage, one of the other characters has the feat, Item Familiar, from UA and enjoys that.
