Holy crap that was a great episode!

Did no-one pick up on the awesome sword-play of The Hound? When the King stands up and shouts out for the fight to stop, The Hound bows to one knee as The Mountain's massive sword swings over where his head was only moments before. That was freaking awesome!

Perfect pick for The Mountain btw.

And I have to disagree with the Piter and Varys comment. I thought that exchange was brilliant; it was a verbal sword-play played out in spectacular fashion. The backdrop, timing and juxtaposition with the external tournament was brilliant.

My one complaint about the series is that it could really use more than ten episodes. There's a lot of the little subtleties missing from the show that make the story a little bit richer. For a recent example, Robb and Tyrion's meeting in Winterfell is written to show Robb is a lot more unsure of himself. It makes it a lot more realistic when he starts winning against the Lannisters, when by all rights he shouldn't have; they underestimated him. Plus, it makes Robb's character arc a little more satisfying - he goes from unsure boy to "King of the North" and straight through to overconfident. I don't think it would be a lot, but maybe three more would be apt.

One small complaint: bring back Syrio! I'm not even asking for much screen time, but it would have been nice to see him instructing Arya prior to her feline pursuits.

Syrio's not really a big character in the book either; as I recall, the only real scenes he has are meeting Arya and saving her. Everything else is filtered through Arya doing other stuff (balancing, chasing cats, etc).

Agreed, but his words follow Arya throughout her travels and tribulations. Also, to make a big emotional impact in his upcoming stand-off, I think they need to establish a bit more of Arya and Syrio's relationship.

I certainly won't disagree that the series could have used 12 or 13 episodes as well. We can certainly hope that CoK gets more than 10.

I thought the scene between Cersei and Robert was an amazing use of creative license that brought more to the series even though it wasn't something that was in the book. Kudos to the writers and directors (and actors) for bringing us that well scripted and acted scene.
.

Very much agreed. I loved that scene. I actually felt sorry for Cersei....
and I was saying to myself: "dude....when you answer with 'No.' you are so dead..."

Who's side is Varies on?

It's been a few years since I read the books so I can't remember how a lot of things played out. In the scene with the (boss as hell) dragon skull, varies is discussing with illyrio (i think that is his name, Dany's pimp) how khal drogo will be coming over to kill robert. then a scene later he is telling the king of that same plan. I seem to remember him being a bad guy, but now he seems to be acting as a good guy.

which is it?

Varies' technique is to tell everyone just as much as he wants them to know, thus seeming to curry favor with them, while at the same time keeping from them the things that advantage him. Thus on the one hand, everyone counts on him as a conduit of information, but no one really trusts him because he's so transparently playing all sides against one another for his own purposes.

That said, I think he is playing a deeper game than is apparent to the Westerosi, one that ultimately does involve trying to get the Targaryans back on the Iron Throne. Thus the conversation with Illyrio foreshadows that deeper game, but since he has no way of knowing what way the wind will ultimately blow, he's got to continue to be an effective spymaster for King Robert, even if that means participating on a plot to kill the very Targaryans he ultimately wants to see back on the throne.
