GAME OF THRONES #5:-The Wolf and the Lion ACT 5 Chapter 1-2011

In the books Renly was supposed to look like Robert in his prime, just prettier. But when Robert is played by Mark Addy..

GRRM hasn't really revealed much about Varys, at least as far as I remember. He seems to have his own agenda.

This episode, by far, was the best one yet (and that's saying a lot considering that all of them have been superb).

In the books, Cersei always seemed very cold, and frankly, very much a B&%ch. But, the scene she had with Addy, while it was apparent that there were some creative licenses made, was beautifully done. It could very well be Lena Headley's contribution to the character and her skill as an actress, but I find myself empathising with Cersei. Which, I think, will make what is coming that much better.

The scene with Renly and Loras was a bit of a surprise for me. Again, I realized that some creative licenses were involved here, but oddly, it kind of makes sense in the context of the books and was oddly compelling.

In the books the reasons for Renly's ambition weren't really that clear, and Loras didn't seem quite that political. Here Loras is putting the idea into Renly's head. It makes sense in context, but we never really see it from this angle in the books.

Or did you mean the part about their sexuality? That is in the books. Not as plainly, but it's there.

Both. Once I saw the scene, though, it made sense because, while there were hints, I never really focused on them. Renly is not as much of a major character as some.

Part of this stems from the fact that in the books we get to know Cersei through the eyes of other characters as every chapter is from the point of view of another character. On TV, we see the characters through a neutral camera.

Cersei is the only character I truly hated and I never hated her more than after reading the chapters through HER eyes, lol. My god that woman is a bitch :D

Yes, it's true, every other character, even Jaime, looks far more sympathetic after we see things through their eyes and learn the backstory that only they could tell us. But with Cersei, the only thing you finally learn after seeing events through her eyes is that she's not nearly as smart or shrewd as she thinks she is.

I think GRRM makes some attempt to humanize her with that prophecy about the fate of her children, but that doesn't really end up helping much.

Very much agreed. I loved that scene. I actually felt sorry for Cersei....
and I was saying to myself: "dude....when you answer with 'No.' you are so dead..."

I found myself watching that scene for a third time last night, and one of the little bits that I love about it is how Robert even makes a historical remark about the (I'm assuming) Greyjoy rebellion when he says (paraphrasing here) "it's been about nine years since we've had a good fight." That's something the casual viewer will dismiss, but a fan would pick up.

Oh, I felt the same way. It's very fascinating how Martin is able to play with reader's emotions toward characters by showing them in so many different ways.
