 I just finished A Game of Thrones  and WOW!!! Very awesome. Now I need to pick up the second book but there is a dilemma. The new Forgotten Realms came out; Dissolution. Anybody start on this one yet or should I get the next book in the series A song of ice and fire.

Thanks.

I'm on page 506 of Martin's 2nd book and I must say.... the Realms cannot possibly be as good.

Fire and Ice all the way!

I'll have to second the motion to move on to "Clash of Kings". I read all three "Song of Ice and Fire" books in a row and just couldn't put them down.

I've never heard of Richard Lee Byers, the author of Dissolution, but I can't believe this book could reach the level of Martin's stuff. "Song of Ice and Fire" is the best fantasy I've read in a long, long time.

Oh, by the way, believe it or not, the books in Martin's series actually KEEP GETTING BETTER! :D

I'm thinking of picking these up myself, but...

Does each novel stand alone, telling a complete story? Or is it more like Dragonlance or the Belgariad, where each book is just a chapter in a larger tale? I don't like being left on cliffhangers, and I understand the series isn't complete yet.

FINISH ALL 3 BOOK BEFORE READING SPOILERS! MANY SURPRISES AWAIT!!!

yes it is a series but i am a recent convert and it is definitely good i look forward to book 4 in spring 2003

No, it is one story broken up into many books.

If you don't like cliffhangers, then you might want to wait 8-10 years for the series to finish. Each book tends to end in them.

I wish I was joking about that time period.

Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" is the best fantasy series on the shelf. I can't wait till the spring for the 4th book "A Feast for Crows".

Don't forget the short story "The Hedge Knight", it is in the "Legends" series of short stories edited by Robert Silverberg. THK is in volume 2 (the green one) but the entire series is in a Tradeback format (a large paperback in this case). It takes place in Westeros about 70-80 years before AGoT begins. There is to be another series of "Legends" books inwhich Martin will have another Dunk and Egg story titled "The Sworn Sword". I believe this is due out sometime this fall but don't quote me on this.

Keep reading ASoIaF and you won't be disappointed.

I'll add to the list for the song of Fire and Ice.

Its the only serise where after I read a scene, had to put the book down and yell obsenities for about five minutes (Holy @#%@#!) over and over again.

Martin does things you just don't expect.

The first book is awesome. The second one I had to force myself to finish but the cliffhanger was so kick @$$. I tried to read the third one but I just wasn't into it when I found out that this wasnt the finale. I don't think I got past page 100.
But thats the way I am. I like a good ending. Not something that leaves room for a sequal. Or drags on. And then there is Wheel of Time.... (don't go there)
Anyhoo, don't let my ramblings keep you from enjoying Martin's stuff.

Peace and smiles :)
