Games that I just don't get

My problem is that I "get" very few games...

NWN is only okay for me -- what I liked about BGII (character interaction, gripping story, etc.) was totally missing -- instead I got a very nice game engine, but as I am not a programmer, nor do I intend to become one anytime soon, the engine alone is far from a selling point and, so far, all the stories have been forced and boring
The right way to play NWN is with a real DM and a custom module with no programming or scripted dialog. D&D online, in other words. And I assume you "get" D&D. ;)

The game I really don't get is The Sims.

Hehe, I get it partially - I love to build up some new houses or something like that, but I can`t stand playing it any longer (especially when each characters needs 1 hour on the toilet four times a day. ).

I don`t get most Ego Shooters, maybe because I lack the talents and training for it. The only exceptions are Alien vs. Predator and Descent 1-3. These games are fun (and they are REALLY 3D, with all the wall climbing and flying through all dimensions).

And I don`t get any card games on PC, like Solitaire (or Spider Solitaire, which my father loves to play on my notebook at weekends, when I am at home and don`t use it myself).

I didn`t get Command & Conquer Generals. The earlier parts were good (the first one even great), but without a storyline, I don`t feel motivated to play the whole game.

GTA and Vice City are a riot - you have to play it long enough and really get into the "Miami Vice" 80s mood - listen to the radio - those stations are HILARIOUS - do the missions - some of the cut-scenes are priceless - it really just is a lot of nostalgiac, gun-toting, car-chasing fun. It takes a bit to really get into the storyline, but there is one, with lots of sub-plots that are optional. It is open ended and you can build up money and eventually buy your own businesses and such, which is also interesting. It does take some practice to get really good at driving and shooting and it is easy to get lost until you figure your way around the rather large city-scape.

I have it, though I haven't finished it - I've been too busy til recently to do anything fun. Now I went overboard and got the second expansion to Neverwinter, the second expansion to Age of Mythology (Titans), the second expansion to Medal of Honor, the second expansion to Civ 3, and Call of Duty - there are VERY few games I like to play, and it just so happens that a bunch are out now and I have some vacation... ;) I still haven't even installed most of them...

I am physically incapable of getting Everquest. When I tried to play it, both times I got the most awful headache within 5 minutes. That game is just not for me.

Saves me money, I guess. When it comes to computer games, I will stick to Hearts and Spider Solitaire, with Minesweeper to change things up. :)

I don't get most modern computer games. I don't understand the appeal of RTSes, nor FPSes (though I did like Doom), nor any MMORPG. I miss the days of turn based strategy games - I don't know what I'd do without consoles to get my fix for tactical combat games.

I actually like the Sims a lot - I think it's like roleplaying. You basically create a whole bunch of characters and give them personalities and backgrounds, and make them act them out. Granted, you have to pretend a bit, but like I said, it's kinda like roleplaying. Okay, it's more like role-playing soap operas, but still, I like trying to come up with different characters.

I really didn't get GTA3. I really liked Vice City, because a) it's just like being in Florida, where I used to live, and miss b) it's like being in the 80s, which I also used to live in, and miss somewhat c) it's like being in an episode of Miami Vice - Tubbs is even in it. Also, the characters are pretty good, in terms of depth and characterization, including the guy you play.

GTA3, OTOH, just didn't do anything for me. Your character never says anything, and is basically a nameless, generic thug. No personality at all. Some of the other characters have some personality, but very little. The city is very bland looking, doesn't remind me of anywhere I've been. No atmosphere. And the gameplay seems so much more limited, in terms of the variety of missions, and the linearity. All you do is work for crime bosses. in Vice City, you become a crime boss early on, and work for yourself.

I don't play a lot of games, but there was one that still gives me unholy conniption fits every time I think about it.

Myst.

I just wanted to grab the computer and shake the living daylights out it looking for one freaking straightfoward clue. My patience for this strange little island and its mystery snapped about about the 48th time I wandered around the island trying to go somewhere and do something that I apparently missed in order to get to something new. Just shoot me.

I guess it wouldn't help to say that my brother solved the clock/bridge puzzle by chance. He spun the wheels randomly to "make some nice music" then hit the button. I wish I could have seen the look on my face. :)

Oof, yeah Myst was another game I really couldn't stand. I bought it on someone else's suggestion and could stand it at all. I don't know why some people swear by the game.

Yeah, put me down for Myst. NWN, which I trembled in anticipation for for 3 years, only lasted 1 month on my hard drive. Please don't get me started on MMORPGs. Diablo-style clickfests seem inane to me. I pretty much hate RTS style games, there are very few that hold my interest for any length of time. FPS games are dependant on the whether there's a good story involved. Thief, Thief II, Deus Ex, Half-Life, Max Payne, System Shock II and No One Lives Forever were fun. Doom, Quake and Unreal type of games don't appeal to me.
