We found that super gluing a heavy washer to the sanded end works really well with chips that would otherwise be fairly top-heavy.

A cotton ball can be glued to a washer, then pulled up to form a teardrop shape. Paint orange, yellow and black, and spray with clear to harden it, and you have campfire/bonfire/whatever-size-you-need fire.

Use the same technique with popsicle stick bases and cotton, and you have segments of Wall of Fire, suitable for a battle mat. Trim to 2 inches in length and each one will represent 10 feet of wall, easy to carry and arrange as needed. You could also use magnetic rubber strip for the base, if you want longer stretches.

To be specific, I find that painting black first, then laying orange and yellow over gives the best visual effect, but it's really a matter of taste.
