Gaming across the US

Ah, fond memories of gaming in Will County (SOuthland Chicago) where I grew up in the 70s. Snow drifts could not keep we fabled adventurers from our appointed time with fate! A merry xmas wave to all your Chicagoians from Sunny Florida. :p

I admit that I thought I'd find more gaming in general in Portland than I have (with its proximity to WotC and Seattle) but I got along just fine. It's not like I can claim to have been to every gaming store or convention, either. The character of this town seems to favor smaller independent business, and I think that spills over into gaming as well. It seems like everyone here is a transplant (often a recent one, too) from other places, so there are lots of people around who haven't been here very long.

First off, welcome to Portland. :) Which gaming store did your group start out in? If you ever get out to the west side (Beaverton area) I strongly suggest you stop in at Rainy Day Games, my FLGS. You will find a lot of CCG's just like any other store, its a moneymaker, but you will also find a lot of role play material and a staff that is very friendly and interested in connecting people. Say hi to the owner Steve and tell him James Beadle sent you!

Portland's gaming scene is staged mostly in it's homes, there are a LOT of gamers in Portland, the trick is finding them. I've spent a lot of years looking for the group of people I game with today, and we have all now been together for 9+ years... some of my players I've gamed with for 20+ years.

Portland is a very livable city, we are recovering from one of the worst job markets in the country (I am still recovering from that), but if you like tree's and friendly liberal people its a great place to live.

You know, as much as I'm pimping Chicago, if the PacWest is an option for you, that'd seem like a good choice. The weather is a lot better, there are mountains, and I have to imagine that there's some good gaming given how close you are to WotC HQ. I have a non-gaming buddy who live in Portland and he's probably never going to leave, he loves it so much.

The economy is in the crapper here as much as it is in a lot of other places. Do not move here unless you have a job lined up, have a huge cushion of money to live off of or plan to deliver pizzas for the first six months to a year you live here.

The problem is that everyone wants to move to Seattle (or at least used to) but the economy hasn't expanded enough to absorb all the new people.

The sheriff

"Although if your gaming activities are running you afoul of Sheriff Leis and his cronies... you're probably more hardcore than you need to be. "

No we are pretty tame, the comment came from a guy who used to game with us and worked for "old Si". He told us "Si would NOT approve." I think he would loose his job if the good sheriff found out. Really can't say anymore, Ian.
