I recently had this idea for my Basic D&D campaign, but I wasn't sure if it would balance well,
Then, I was re-reading my old 4th edition Gamma World, and realized it did basically the same thing.
I'll try and use 3e terms for describing my system...
When earning an increase to BAB, rather than simply increasing the BAB, the character instead chooses one of the following...
I think this would do a good job of reflecting different combat styles and allowing a bit of customization, without changing mechanics or increasing complexity.
Arcane spellcasters and lightly armoured types would probably benefit the most from this change.
Thoughts?

- +1 BAB (all attacks)
- +2 BAB (missile attacks only)
- +1 AC
- +1 HD
