No. Fighter first, unless the Valar sent him down as an already high-level character. But honestly, there has to be a certain level of Fighter class to be that proficient with sword and staff (one-handed).

I don't necessarily look at the Ranger as "I hate those things with a passion". I look at it as "I'm really really good at hunting those things".

Gandalf could be a paladin. He definate ain't no high level wizard (I think the best I see in lord of teh rings is daylight, 3rd level spell
