Gary Gyxax vs Morrus Celebrity Burping, to benefit GenCon RPGA Judges!

Welcome to my shameless attention-whore of a thread title.

Hey, if you folks going to GenCon can judge even one or two slots, you'll make a lot of gamers VERY happy - and you'll probably have a ton of fun. I like running games at cons because in a lot of ways you make your own fun - and after running more than 150 tournaments over ten years, I'm still having a great time.

If you can do this and help out, please email Robert Wiese ASAP! And tell 'em EN World (or Kevin Kulp) sent you. :D

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi all.

You already know we need judges, but if you would be so good as to post this message to any player lists (regional LG, LC, L-whatever, club lists, etc), I would really appreciate it.

----
It is getting close to Gen Con now (only two more weekends), and we still need judges. Lots of them. It might be that you signed up and your data was lost in a transfer or computer crash (we had one of those), so if you have not gotten an email from me recently with a schedule, you might want to email me at robertconguy@yahoo.com right away.

If you have not signed up to judge, please consider doing so. Even one or two slots would help us out tremendously. To remind you, here are the benefits of judging:

Four slots gets you into the con for free (or a refund, if needed) Seven slots gets you into judge housing in the Hyatt (mostly, some rooms in the Hilton, 4 to a room) You get a nifty judge t-shirt to keep and wear around the country later

If you are willing to give us a couple slots, please email me at robertconguy@yahoo.com so I can set you up. When you do, it helps to give me your RPGA number, how many slots you are willing to work (a number, not "however many you need"), and what games you know and prefer.

To show how we stand, please find below the list of all events by slot, and the minimum number of judges we still need for that event in that slot. The number in parentheses shows how many I would really like, including 20% or so in extras. In some cases, the extras are more like 40-50% (as in LG and LC and LF). I am including events where the minimum needed is 0 to show you where things are good.

* indicates super-critical shortage due to the event being sold out.

I have not listed volunteering in HQ in most slots, because we are only short one person in a couple slots. The one problem slot is indicated.

Total numbers: 184 minimum judge slots, 33 minimum volunteer slots

So, how to read this chart. What we want is the number in parentheses, but what I will fill first is the number before the parentheses. Please feel free to volunteer for any game listed that does not have a 0 only for its needs; as we can use the extras, we can fit you in.

The extra tables should put LC at 10 extra tables, LG at 12 extra tables, and LF at 4 extra tables. These games are where we send anyone we have to not seat at another game.

Thanks for volunteering, and thanks for even thinking about it.

Do you have to be a member of the RPGA?

Yes, but membership is free.

I've DMed slots at GenCon before, and it's pretty fun. I've met tons of cool people through RPGA judging like our own Piratecat, whom I met for the first time when we co-judged an RPGA Cthulhu event. I also met most of the people I currently game with through the RPGA. It's a great way to meet new people.

Heck, I'd run a few slots myself this year if I wasn't running demos of the Lord of the Rings RPG.

Okay, so what do the abreviations mean? Some of them I know, but some are more obscure.
Here's a few I know:

  • LG - Living Greyhawk
  • LD - Living Death
  • LC - Living City
  • VS - Virtual Seattle (Shadowrun)
  • LJ - Living Jungle
  • LF - Living Force (Star Wars)
  • LA - Living Arcanis
  • LR - Living Rokugan (Legend of the 5 Rings)
  • LDS - Living Dragonstar

That's it! There is talk of judge-training, but I don't think it's materialized yet. All you need to do is want to DM a 4 hour time slot and have fun - and try to make the game fun for the players. There's 5-10 minutes of filling out a form at the end, but that's painless.

My Dad once told me that the more different cars you drive, the better driver you become. The same is true of DMing and different players. I love running new players, 'cause I keep learning stuff - and I can try DMing tricks that I wouldn't try at home. Even better, I've met more than a dozen really, really cool friends through this... and that doesn't suck, either. :D

Say, anyone wanna send me a plane ticket? It's for a good cause! Think of the GAMERS! :D

Seriously - I'd help if I could. This is too good a deal to pass up. But I'm broke at the moment; I wouldn't be able to afford transportation or meals. I wouldn't be able to get the souvenirs I crave, and let's face it - shopping is a big part of GenCon. I'd probably be able to afford some events, and obviously I'd be able to schmooze with some publishers, but...alas. Cruel, cruel fate.

Oh well. There's always Indianapolis next year - perhaps. I don't suppose any of you would be willing to wish for me to make it into one of the top three slots of the setting contest, at the very least? ;)
