Point is, the party caster is usually not powerful enough to pull an uber powerful extraplanar through because that guy is spoken for by someone that can prohibit the summons/gate on his turf. Point two is the hazard of opening a two-way gate to another plane...especially a non-pre-determined location. (like at the bottom of a lake of acid) I'd turn this spell, when not prepared appropriately, into a game of 'How quick can we close the Gate?'
