I’ve never liked Buffy the Vampire Slayer and it’s popularity is confusing.
I think part of it is that we live in the entertainment world Buffy created. It feels a lot less revelatory and necessary now, having kicked the door open so wide that tons of media has expanded on what it helped establish.

Loved Xena/Hercules as a kid. It was campy, it was over the top sometimes, scenery looked visible fake lots of times, as seasons passed plots were more and more ridiculous. But Lucy Lawless was my early teen crush.

Watched both Buffy and Angel and while Sarah Michelle was hottie, i liked Angel more. Buffy leaned too much on the high school and college life drama. Angel was more to my taste, more gritty, more dark, more morally grey. As it happened, around the time Angel came on, i got introduced to WoD and it just clicked. I think Angel is great blueprint for WoD chronicle.

As with everyone, I have a long list of fandoms I didn’t join, core properties which I think are overrated despite my consuming a decent amount of them. These include Doctor Who (all generations), Dune, Blake’s 7, Babylon 5, BSG, and GoT.

I’ve enjoyed superhero comics for a long time but I’d agree that they should be split up into kids and not kids. I do actually think that Superman and Spider-Man are better for being for kids, and new properties which aren’t bound by continuity are better written for broader audiences. For that matter, I think superhero continuity can die in a fire, and so can some properties which have gone on too long or just don’t work in the modern era. Yes, I mean you, Batman*.

*That said, I think Batman for kids is basically OK, in an animated series or JLU sort of way, but probably not as a main character.

That said, I’m sad the reboot/revival got cancelled cause it’s clear folks really really like Buffy.
I liked both Buffy and Angel at the time (and I thought Eden Studios did a bang up job with the RPGs) but Whedon’s toxic voyeuristic brand of pseudo-feminism, as typified by Xander, tasted pretty bad to me then as now. It would have been nice to see SMG try to reclaim her character in the sequel series but I guess we won’t see that now.

I would bet on Buffy returning some time in the near future. The franchise is a lot stronger than, say, Charmed, which got a four-season return. (I would also bet on us seeing more Supernatural in the future for the same reason, but probably as an animated show.)
