Hi,
My wife is playing a Dwarven lvl 1/5/1 Fighter/Wizard/Artificer (thanks Wulf).
She took the Attune Gem feat from Magic of Faerun, feeling it was appropriate for her dwarf's personality, and love for gems.
Its a little unclear to me how gems can and CAN'T be activated, which seems to be the primary limitation of this form of item crafting.
It specifically states you can have a gem: activate when a physically describable creature comes within 5 feet of it, when touched, or the artificer can activate it on purpose.
Their example is a gem of Prot. from Evil that activates when an outside comes within 5 feet of it, and affects whoever is holding/wearing the gem.
How would, say, a Gem of Feather Fall work?
Can you specify that the gem will go off when you fall more than 5 feet? Is it more flexible than the specific 3 ways it mentions gems can be activated?
Is it a standard action for the artificer to activate a gem on purpose...even though one way to have them activated is by touch?
Any corrections or clarifications been posted on this through sage advice?
Thanks for the discussion,
Skaros
