Gems, except not randomly generated

Anyone recall Denrandrien's Jewlery and Gems Generator? It was an old VB 3.0 program that did just what its called. Really makes the gems kinda cool.

I told my wife about this thread and she referred me to a number of good sources on the magical significance of various gems and other stones, herbs, and incenses. Just typing this, some ideas come to me about how I might use this in-game: Brown Agate is clearly something every adventurer should carry an abundance of. Obsidian might make a good material component for a zone of truth spell. How about a goblet or tankard hewn from Amethyst? Enchant it with neutralize poison and you've got a vessel that the character can drink from all night with intoxication. Gold tiger's eye might be a suitable focus or material component for commune, contact other plane, or even planar ally spells. Protection from evil or magic circle against evil might work better if malachite were a part of the casting. Finally, smoky quartz is just too cool. Remove negative energy could be very helpful, depending on the campaign. what about a +1 to turning attempts or turning damage?

There's always the good old fashioned Soul Trap gem - got something in it... can lead to some interesting situations, I reckon?

Half the time in my campaign it's a case of 'Ooooooh some gems!... with glowy things inside of them...'

Arcana Unearthed allows the use of certain gems to enhance the power of certain spells. Kind of like ordering a "top shelf drink" at a bar, the superior material components (or foci) improve the DC, the accuracy, the power, etc. of the spell they are used with.

Various games have had Gem Mages who use gems either as foci, spellbooks/scrolls, or as sources of mystical energy.

You could associate gems with certain elements...like Opals for water, rubies for fire, diamonds for air, and emeralds for earth.

AU, P169, Spell Catalysts. Diamond, Emerald, Sapphire, and Topaz are specifically mentioned, as is the fictional magical mineral, Andrecite.

I imagine there are more in AE, but I don't have that yet.

Think someone here could describe, for instance, the basic appearance and colors of various gemstones and precious stones, for those of us less knowledgeable about it? I tend not to use certain gems mentioned in the DMG simply because I don't know how to describe them. I can describe several, but there are almost just as many I don't know the appearance of.
