Gen Con Event reg goes live TODAY, MAY 7th!! [Merged with 'Server Problems']

Except I don't pay for Weather or Traffic, and they aren't a business with customers.

Seriously folks, you are customers, not sheep. Act like one.

I plan on, once again, giving Peter a serious working over if I see him roaming the halls. As I said in an earlier post - I specifically direct people away from the con, and towards other cons if they are looking for an opinion.

My view about the Gencon registration process is that its much like complaining about the weather or traffic. It's like this every year, and never changes (for whatever reason, legit or not) so I figure you can either live with it, or decide not to deal with it (and not go).

I understand you point of view, but this is my first year registering like this, so, it is new to me.
I am curious why the event planners don't try and address the problem, if it is indeed like this every year...

It's non-trivial handling this kind of surge load, but it is do-able. You'd think they'd outsource it to someone used to dealing with it. Of course, maybe they do and keep switching hosts every year trying to find one that's capable.

My only guess is that the number of PCs they need to handle the extreme load on two days out of the year makes it impractical or too expensive. I've got no particular knowledge of the situation, nor do I know what it would take technially to solve the issue.

I feel your pain. I'm getting ready to go home and I'm just praying that what few games I got will still be in my cart when I get to log back on later tonight. :(

It took 1.5 hours, but I finally was able to pay for the events (and I got 100% of the events I wanted).

No need for PCs when there are companies out there that solely exist to provide network load and balance management on an outsourced basis. I.e. AKAM - Akamai Technologies.

This really isn't rocket science. . .

Same. I jumped on right at 3:00, just finalized checkout. I also got the 4 events I wanted - still pretty surprised by that.

I've dealt with a company that puts on a show that dwarfs GenCon, and they had some registration issues, too. Just cause you outsource it doesn't mean the people actually doing the work are competent.

It's not cheap, either, and if GenCon is down to one show a year (?) they might not have the funds to allocate to it. Who knows.

I just got in and got my games. I'll try to book some more later, but I'm happy with what I got - though I got froze out of the Cthulhu Masters tournament. Argh.
