Noted that they are asking about opinions on Gen Con So Cal. How about Gen Con East Coast as well? Bring a Mega Con to NYC, DC, Baltimore, or Florida even! I'll be there in a heartbeat!

I agree. We need to have something for us east coasters. There's already something in florida I read about on the publisher's board, but something definately needs to be in the northeast.

Personally, I'd rather there was just one in the US. If I can travel all the way to the US to visit Gen Con, I'm sure people in the US can travel as far as Indiana.

Otherwise, there's less reason for me to go. I'll only be seeing a portion of the people I'd want to, and I'm not going to cross the Atlantic 3-4 times a year. :(

But them those reasona are all entirely selfish! :D

If you are willing to go to Florida or NYC, then how about Indianapolis? :) The "real" Gen Con is moving there this very year! (In 2003, actually.)

There is one thing, however, that a lot of people don't realize separates the U.S. - The Rocky Mountains REALLY are a large physical barrier. The mountain range itself is largely unpopulated, and is a major barrier to anything but air travel, which not all people care for. The Alps in Europe, while substantial, don't divide Europe as effectively as the Rockies do, because Italy still has fairly easy sea travel to get to it.

Compared to the Rocky Mountain Range, the rest of the U.S. is a comparative tablelands. :) Therefore, you see a lot of events split between east and west because of this. The divide is a psychological one, influenced by a natural one.

I'd MUCH rather there be just one GenCon US. Otherwise, some of the people that would come from far and wide would not make it to, say, the one closer to me. It reduces the size of the con, and heck, that's one of the best parts.

We need but one GenCon US! I made it to Milwaukee from Tennessee this year, I'm making it to Indy next year, if you want to go to GenCon save your money now and make the trip! It's worth it, and more fun because it's THE gaming convention.

Adding another GenCon is great for the people on the west coast, but bad for the con itself.

Now, there won't be just one convention known as The gaming convention, but two diluted conventions. Granted, I don't think the dilution will be that bad, but it will be inevitable. Either that, or GenConSoCal will always be the 'bastard stepchild' of the "real" GenCon.

I also wonder how the vendors like this addition? Now they have to add another convention to reach their audience.

Of course, if GenCon moved to the west coast, or even just alternated years between midwest and west coast, all the midwesteners would howl angrily. But it would be nice for there to be one convention we could all call "The" gaming convention, no matter where it is.

Heh -- in a couple of weekends, I'm going from the North Carolina mountains to the North Carolina beach for the weekend.

On a related note, everyone's been telling me that Indianapolis is NOT within driving distance of Asheville, NC. So I just ran both driving distances through Yahoo Maps.

Driving from almost-one-end of my state to almost-the-other is 394 miles, 7 hours and 55 minutes.

Driving from Asheville through three states (TN, KY, IN) to Indianapolis is 75 miles further -- and 45 minutes less on the road.

Someone once told me this is the difference between the US and Europe: in the US, we think 100 years is a long time, and in Europe, they think 100 miles is a long way.

Gencon 2003, here I come!

Two US?

How about GenCon Canada, GenCon Europe, etc... before granting the states another GenCon????

We want our gencon! We want our gencon!

:p

I think that since Chicago, Indy, and Milwaukee are in 'the midwest', people outside of 'the west' tend to think they're about halfway across the country. They're not. According to Mapquest, NYC to Indy is about a 12-hour drive, while SF to Indy is a 38-hour drive.

It's simple really...GenCon SoCal just needs a totally different name unassociated with the name GenCon.

Origins has been a great convention for years and while Andon Unlimited were doing both Cons, they both flourished from a gamers perspective.

Adding another Con under the same management won't make things worse or dilute the con as long their remains only one GenCon!
