GenCon '06: A No Go

Angel Tarragon

Dawn Dragon
Things have been pretty hectic over here and since I have been gone a lot has happened. My dad has had a health issue which gave everyone in my house a wakeup call. He is in physical therapy and is working towards getting heart healthy. I will not be able to make GenCon this year, as my financial position finds me seriously strapped. I am able to make purchases towards gaming products, but at the same time am dealing with pain and depression.

As some of you were aware I had a girlfriend, Mindy. Well, things didn't work out. :( We mutually decided to go our separate ways and be friends. Thing is I haven't heard from her in over two months. So much for friendship. I am feeling lost and my patience for love is wearing thin. I feel I have lost a part of myself.

I am going to try an make it to next year, if it just isn't possible, then SoCal will definetely be an alternative.

Welcome and Condolences for joining the Brokenhearted ENWorlder's Club.

Please allow me to give you the first piece of Unsolicited Advice.

If it is in any way humanly possible to go to GEN CON then do so.

I certainly understand money trouble. It turns out that my wife was skimping on the bills to save money to move out. She moved out the same weekend ENWorld crashed (talk about a rough weekend).

What you need (in my opinion) is to surround yourself with friends, people who appreciate you, GEN CON would be a chance to do that.

I was lucky, last weekend there was a filk convention (SF/F folk music) 1.5 miles from my front door. I didn't have to pay for transportation or a hotel room. I went to it and sang, and had fun, and talked to people, and cried on a couple of shoulders.

Please don't isolate yourself, we'd miss you.

Doesn't look like GenCon is going to work for me either. I hope to console myself with GenCon SoCal this year. The good thing is my reason is purely financial, my lovelife and health of my family is as good as can be hoped for.

Hmm. I intend on driving to whichever one(s) I go to. If you intend on doing the same maybe we can car pool. Only my daughter will be going with me, and she is too young to drive.

I hope your dad does great on his rehab. I also hope you soon realize that this girl has done nothing but prove it is a darn good thing you two went your separate ways now. Later (such as after marriage) would most likely have been a lot worse.

Just being friends isn't the same for some people. Likely it means at least you split with no hard feelings, but it's usually not that you'll continue to hang out and talk a lot, at least for a bit. I wouldn't worry about it.

Welcome back, and sorry to hear things are rough for you. Hope they get better.

Thanks for the support everyone.

That is difficult to do in my case. I have two really great friends that live here in AZ and one in CA. One of my friends lives in Glendale, works and his girlfriend has him whipped. If we want to hang out, he needs at least a month's notice. My other frined is married, works full time and lives in Chino Valley. He keeps telling me to het my fishing license but never settles on a day to invite me over. At best I can call these people, but it isn't the same.

I never realized until late last night, but my area is lousy with gamers. I hope to god, that if my family ever moves again it is to San Jose (CA), New York or Columbus (OH). I used to have a cousin that lived in Columbus and he tells me that the area is indeed filled with gamers.
