GenCon 2004 Memories

Buttercup

Princess of Florin
Greetings all! I'm back from GenCon, probably earlier than most others, since I just live a few hours away. I could have stayed until this afternoon, because there was still more to do, but I'm just worn out, and I was missing my husband & doggie.

So I thought I'd start a thread where all of us who attended could share our highlights.

First, it was great to see so many EN Worlders again. Crothian, Psion, Cthulu's Librarian, Hand of Evil, JGBrowning & Suzi Yee, Hellhound, Dextra and the charming Gelflings and the ever popular Teflon Billy are all people I had met last year, and was delighted to see again. And then there were so many new faces! It's wonderful to match faces to screen names. Only problem is that I'm so tired I can't remember everyone. If I haven't mentioned you, I mean no slight!

I ran a game for Cthulu's Librarian and Truth Seeker, who were lots of fun. I had been worried that my plot was quite transparent, but they didn't get it until the very end. I enjoyed describing their trip through the sewers, and was slightly disappointed that Cthulu's Librarian's character declined to crawl on her belly through the human waste. :p

Psion ran a T20 game for Teflon Billy, Justinian, me, Jester47 and one other fine and charming EN World member whose name I'm blanking on at the moment, and it was great fun. We spaced the captain, traded successfully and bribed our way out of a fight. We were thoroughly rotten, in other words.

In what is becoming a GenCon tradition for me, I strolled the dealer's hall with Crothian, who I think was starting to get the DTs from not posting for so long. But I swear, he never once started screaming and twitching, so perhaps the medication is working better now. ;)

I spent too much money, but got lots of cool stuff, (Conan! Midnight boxed set! Fiery Dragon counters in nifty tins!) and also got lots of swag. The WotC party on Thursday night netted Psion and me some posters, tote bags and T-Shirts, plus I got some other way cool swag for volunteering at the Ennies booth, perhaps the best of which was Black Monks of Glastonbury. Oh, and I bought this completely hysterical t-shirt that might bother Eric's Grandma, so I'll use the spoiler tag to tell you what it says. It's got a guy holding up a d20, and it says
I rolled a 20, so you bitches can suck it!
I'm eager to wear it next time I DM.

Thursday night I went to dinner with Hellhound, Psion, Crothian and Jaldean, and had a good time even though Hellhound has this odd Canadian accent.:D Friday night a bunch of us went to dinner at Buca di Beppo (spelling?), an incredible Italian restaurant that serves everything family style. Good lord was it yummy! Saturday night I went to dinner with some Nutkinland/Nothingland folks at Alcatraz, and yet another good time was had.

So here I am, back in the real world, tired and poor, but happy.

I enjoyed meeting you too, Mark. And I will tell everyone you're harmless. Hopefully they won't notice that my fingers are crossed behind my back....

Cool.
I had a great time also.
My wife (Penguin Wizard (brand new to ENWorld)) & I started off Thursday with a two-hour stint at the EN Booth. It was cool and started off with meeting RangerWickett (whom I ran into several times over 3 days).
Jaldeen (Joseph Miller) is very nice and gave us some cool swag for working (including Hammer & Helm). Thanks to the publishers whom donated to the volunteers.
We met several members there including Spoonybard, Teflon Billy, Hellhound, Crothian (whose knuckles are NOT huge from overuse) among others whom I am blanking on.
We went to the dealers hall for a bit just to look around and buy some dice and visit Paladin and Paladinwife at The Gamer's Bag Booth. Then off to Epic Party where the swag was cool and so were the people. Thank WOTC for all the cool stuff.
Friday we set out to do all the WOTC demos so we could roll the big die for prizes. Just for the record Heroscape ROCKS !!!!. The dungeondelve was fun and the d&d minis game was cool. RangerWickett was our demonstrator for the Starwars minis demo (must resist already addicted to the d&d ones).
The card games demos were ok but I did not like the baseball game one. The starwars tcg demo was cool cause you got a starter set for doing it.
We did lunch at the RAM (anyone else get that giant Strahd burger?) then did more demos.
The ENnies were good. I sat with War Golem during the show.
Saturday we wrapped up our demos and rolled the die. We both won GOL minis and walked around some more before wrapping up and coming home Saturday evening.
For the record one of my highlights was WINNING a World's Largest Dungeon (It is cool) from Piazo in a drawing. I also bought some Tact-Tiles based on fellow ENWorlder's recommedations and they rock. Can't wait for next year ;)

Oh, man, you found them? I was looking around and asking everybody if the people who sold Tact-Tiles were there, and I came to the conclusion that they weren't! /me pouts.

I guess I'll just have to break down and order off their website.

I looked all over Friday and couldn't find them then did Saturday afternoon at booth 843. The lady at the booth said they had just gotten there. Wonder how many lost sales that accounted for?

BTW - Nice to have met you also. Forgot about that when I posted. :D

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed meeting EN Worlders and how friendly I found the con. Demos in the dealers' room were fun and I ordered a dice bag from Paladinwife. Hope she tells how many dice were in her guessing bag. I like all the swag also.

What? What did you load his program into so that you could stroll into the dealer's hall with him? A laptop? An I-Pod? What?
