Gencon OZ... anyone going?

I would have love to have gone but Brisbane is a little too far from Adelaide for me. One of the guys in my gaming group is going though. The 2 brothers that run the LGS here have got a stall set up. I imagine that was just an excuse for them to go to Gen Con themselves though! :)

As to Brisvegas being a tourist center: it tries to be. But, much like Alice Springs, it's more a case of it's NEAR places that are. The Sunshine Coast is very nice and the Gold Coast is popular with tourists. What this means, especially in the off tourist season, is cheap accomodation. Or so I've heard, I always have a friend or family member to stay with when I visit. Brisbane is fairly big (1.5 million in what I shall dub Greater Brisbane) and will easily absorb the couple of hundred gamers who will blow in from out of town. Australia has a much smaller population than the US (21 million at last census) and that means a correspondingly smaller number of gamers. So this will not be anywhere near as big as the original GenCon and have correspondingly fewer logistical problems/impact on the local economy. But from little things big things grow!
This pretty much sums it p then (aside from the coordinator living there. :D). Logistically, it appears that there is adequate lodging, easy travel to/from and a community that either supports or is ambivalent to the con being held there. It sounds like your GenCon is akin to most of our local cons here in the States, so it should play out quite nicely. It's always cool to here from the other Gens...last year at GenCon I talked to a couple of English gamers that had flown in just to game and buy, I asked why when there was a GenCon in the UK and they said, because 200 people isn't GenCon. I then realized how much I didn't know about the overseas cons.

I had a chance to work in Alice Springs for a short while but was unable to do so, I count it as one of those lost chances that I often fret over. Cheers All!

Would have loved to have gone, but the twins were born Monday 23rd and we are still trying to get them settled in and all.

Had thought while still in the hospital about it, but now reality has kicked in.

As an aside, GenConOz has its own forums (for those not currently aware) and one thing Ian (the owner) wants to do is have a discussion as to where to hold it next year, as a number of people offered comments/suggestions about the benefits/distractions of some of the capital cities. When that thread opens sometime in the future, put your two bob in and we shall see what happens next year.

No worries, Ant. Maybe next time.
Very late notice but it looks like there's now one space available for that OD&D game. If you want something to do today at around 1pm and can register for it (not sure how on-the-day registration works) then please come along!
