Realistically though doesn't it seem silly that one can cast a spell but if ya don't put a rank in Spell craft you can't even figure out the simplest things about them.

I don't think it is so irrealistic. It's not because you can speak a language that you can read it. Magic is the same. A sorcerer is someone who feels the magic in his blood and have learned to form it with gesture and words... but it doesn't mean he has the knowledge to read scrolls.

Now, a sorcerer with Scribe scroll, and unable to identify at least his own spells on a scroll, that would be more ridiculous.

I think for Wizards it is a bit of a head-scratcher if they can't identify spells, though for Sorcerers not as much necessarily--the Sorcerer may do it completely by instinct and natural talent. Then again, I've never seen a caster who refused to put even a single skill point into Spellcraft, knowing this.

As to the DC on identifying the items instantly, I'd say it's spot on. This is a powerful ability and a difficult task--you are identifying an item, forgoing the spell normally used to do so, completely based on study and knowledge of magic. In one of my other PbPs, the level 5 caster has +17 to Spellcraft. He can do it much of the time because he's very good at it and has the synergies and such. I think a level 1 Wizard or Sorcerer should not be able to easily identify an item. This is a neophyte who's just started. To her, everything is still new, and Identify is a powerful spell she can barely cast. And DC 25 is the perfect way to mirror this. The dumber sorcerers or poorly-studied wizards can't figure it out at all, but the Hermione Grangers of their wizard school can pull the names of potions just by seeing them 20% of the time at 1st level and 35% at 2nd level.

Edit: Velmont made my first point while I was typing it :)

Who's to say there's only one way to cast a spell? Spellcraft may allow you to see past stylistic differences to the core of the magic.

I would always let a scriber read the scroll he had written, though, I must agree.

My Daddy said I can play with him here while he is gone fighting.

I am 9.

He will help me make a player.

He said you were all nice.

He comes home tomorrow.

Welcome! I take it DerHauptman is your Daddy? It's nice that the two of you can play together!

You're DH's daughter who had trouble logging on because you couldn't log off your dad, right? Good luck and good gaming!

Probably your common sense thing, but in general, the untrained rules state that you can't pass more than a DC 10 check with a skill you can't use untrained.

I thought that was only the Knowledge skills? With most skills, either they can be used untrained (regardless of DC) or can only be used trained (regardless of DC). The text
An untrained Knowledge check is simply an Intelligence check. Without actual training, you know only common knowledge (DC 10 or lower).
found in the section on Knowledge skills isn't something I've noticed for any other skills.

Yes, I am the Huptman's daughter.

I read his games sometimes and he let me play in a game around Christmas.

D&D is fun, my Mom says I am too young but Daddy made a game with not so much killing and more other stuff. Made her say it was ok. (He said was the only time he'd openly disagree with Mommy - he thinks I am old enough.) I can read the books and do the math.

So where are the players stuff on here? I like to read about players historys.

Welcome to our youngest player... well, i think.

If you want to play with your dad, I can easily intoduce your first character in my adventure where you father play (di Senzio's Tournament). And your mom would be happy that up to now, there is 0 dead in my adventure.

If you need help to make your character, don't hesitate to ask question here, we are a lot of people that are ready to give the answer you seek.
