General Psion question

Then simply don't add psionics to your game (because you do not want to add another rules set to the game). It would just result in you having a lot of work chasing down the rules all the time, which would probably only lessen the overall fun.

It's not like there aren't enough powerful character choices available otherwise... ;)

Just wondering: wouldn't this be the same for any other spellcaster? Heck, with two encounters the barbarian could be on perma-rage. Or is there some kind of extra psion-wackiness that comes into play?
It's similar to other spellcasters, but moreso. Ignoring bonus spells/PP for high stats for the moment, let's compare a 10th level psion and a 10th level sorcerer. The psion has 88 power points, which means he can manifest a total of 8 5th-level powers (with a slight boost to push it to 10 PP per manifestation), plus one 4th level power (again with a slight boost to 8 PP). Meanwhile, the sorcerer can only do 3 - but the sorcerer also has 5 4th level powers and 6 of each lower level to fall back on, and these lower-level powers can often be the match of augmented psionic powers (e.g. a psion can manifest an Energy Ball (fire) augmented to 10 PP - the equivalent of a 5th level spell and then some - in order to do 10d6+10 damage, while the sorcerer can do 10d6 with a 3rd level spell).

he also wanted his fighter to be able to use a bastard sword with one hand.

Well, that is what exotic weapon proficiency (bastard sword) is foe, eh? Or did he want to do that without spending the feat for it...
