How about the B'omarr monks (the spider robot looking guys that lived in Jabba's palace) who had their brains transferred to jars to experience the rest of their unnatural lives with no external stimulus? Effectively, they're the anti-cenobites. And if you don't think that's creepy enough, there's at least one case of someone bring forcibly "ascended" against their will.
