For me the outstanding Star Wars novel of this or any other era is Claudia Gray’s Lost Stars, which is basically a standalone space opera novel about two kids who end up on opposite sides in the Rebellion Era, ending with one of them crashing her Star Destroyer into Jakku. I particularly liked the character of one of her best friends, an Alderaanian Imperial officer who doubles down on fascist loyalty after the destruction of Alderaan.

That's one i mentioned. It and the Thraen books are the only ones with a good reputation. Came out 10 years ago iirc.

I read the first two High Republic books - it’s a really good setting and high concept (I’ve run a game in that era and would do so again) but the story itself I was a bit overblown, like a long comics crossover I didn’t really care about.

What counts as "more recent"? I've read the newer Thrawn books, Dark Disciple, Catalyst, Ahsoka, Lords of the Sith, the Rise of Empire, Lost Stars, From A Certain Point of View (Ep4), Battlefront: Twilight Company, Bloodline, and the Aftermath trilogy. That last wasn't great, but the others were all decent. I know there are newer books, but those are all Disney era.
