General TFT:ITL discussion

I've told this story before, but it bears repeating here. Back before 1e AD&D came out our group played a bunch of stuff, including a lot of Melee and Wizard. In fact, we all made rules sets to try and turn it into a 'proper' RPG. We were thrilled when Metagames announced that TFT was in the works and would be out real soon now... It was going to be our game of choice as soon as it did. Unfortunately that didn't happen. There were delays piled on delays. In fact one or two of the AD&D books came out first. After spending the money on the AD&D hardcovers we decided to stick with it after TFT came out, despite the fact that we liked what Steve Jackson had done with it, so that we could get our money's worth out of them.

So let that be a lesson to you entrapenours (sp?) out there. If you say you're coming out with something, get it out!

I had Melee and Wizard and the original solo dungeons right before I was able to get into my first D&D campaign. Excellent system, lots of fun. I loved the game art, it was vibrant. My favorite thing was how illusions were just as valid as summoning spells and really made for great tactical choices.

Steve Jackson lived in Austin in the '80s? So did my dad...

He still does (Steve, that is). Steve Jackson Games is still based there.

Where is Copperas Cove in relation to Austin?

Copperas Cove is about 90 miles NW of Austin. I haven't heard "Copperas Cove" in a long, long time...my old girlfriend had formerly lived in Lampasas, which was just down the road.

Like I said earlier, a company called Dark City Games has released a mechanically compatible ruleset via PDF, called Legends of the Ancient World. It's a free download at their website (the link's on the left hand side, under 'Rules'). Their schtick is to sell adventures for the ruleset. I can't speak to the quality of any of their for-profit stuff, but the freebies are (IMHO) pretty decent.

Actually quite good, all things considered. They accomplish pretty much exactly what they are aiming to do - recreate the old solitaire (or "programmed") TFT microquests.

They apparently actually don't exactly make money off of it, either. It's done mostly as a hobby, because they really liked TFT when they were kids.
