Savage Worlds. Doesn't do everything completely and equally well, but its extremely malleable and detailed.

GURPS- I agree it does not blow chunks, its just not everyones cup of tea.

True20

It assumes nothing, it allows pretty much everything and is IMO a nice, not terribly complex sytem that allows for cross genre gaming. I use it for fantasy but know people who use it for sci-fi and horror as well. Great rule set for worldbuilders and its OGL so there are 3pps making support for it and therefore no dearth of creative ways to use the system.

IMO Green Ronin hit a home run with the True20 system.

Savage Worlds is my game of choice. Does what I want it to do incredibly well, ignores or minimizes the stuff I think is unimportant. Can adapt to nearly any genre easily, is easy to learn and lots of fun (focus on fun). Bonus for gamemasters: little prep and less bookkeeping.

I've played Hero and liked it for tremendous granular control, but there is a lot of overhead to play. Not my system of choice to play, and I would hate to run it.

GURPS is like Hero, but I didn't particularly enjoy playing it. Some great supplements, though.

Chaosium's Basic Roleplaying system is a good, solid system (I've enjoyed RQ, Stormbringer and CoC in the past), and I wouldn't say no to playing various incarnations of it. I'm not a big fan of the way the new generic book is organized, but the system is still good. (Although I'd default to Savage Worlds in most cases.)
