Geography and statistical probability of ENWorld members

I've had this curious thought for quite a while now.

Given that New York and Los Angeles are the two most populous cities in the country (speaking about the U.S., obviously) one would assume that a good percentage of folks who post on here would be from either city.

But in fact, it seems that the majority of people on here are from the midwest, or the south, with a smattering of folks scattered around eastern time zones as well.

In fact, I don't think I could name any person on here from either Los Angeles or New York. I do recall some people from NY being on here on 9/11 posting updates and whatnot, but I don't recall their names.

Is it just me, or does anyone else find that statistically odd? I mean, the population of NY is 8,008,278, and the population of Orange County, CA is (2001 est.) 9,637,494.
The U.S. population on 4/1/2000 was 281,421,906.

The combined populations of LA and NY is 17,645,772. That's a percentage of 6.27%. Is 6.27% of ENWorld from Los Angeles and New York?

Actually since enworld is a global community you would have to comparer the NY and LA populations to the world population to arrive at a fair percentage for your query. Here is the math.

World Pop: 6,122,627,560
Ny & LA: 17,645,772

% of the world's population that lives in NY or LA: 0.288%

# of enworld member that makes up 0.288% of the community: 36

So do we have 36 people from NY or LA. BTW: if you're from one of these places and have more then one handle let us know how many handles you have because this is actually a count of handles as opposed to people.

It's your imagination. You don't have a big enough sample to draw any inferences.

The people you see posting on the messageboards are a small fraction of the 12,000+ EN World members (probably less than 5% of the total). A substantial fraction of that number are not Americans, so even if you had access to the location of every single registered EN World member, that number would probably be less than 10,000.

[Bad stats removed]

Scanning the messageboards isn't an accurate enough technique to figure out what you want -- though we've got enough population to do it if you had access to the full membership data.

You might, however, conclude that there are a larger percentage of blabbermouths from the southern and midwestern US, however. :p

I know Kitana is in New York, but I can't think of anyone else.
That animation in your signature makes my browser slow way down and scroll choppily. I'm not sure if anyone else is feeling that effect.

Well, look to see who's posted on this thread.

Out of seven of us, five are from the South or Midwestern U.S, with two locations undisclosed.

(Hi Die Kluge. Ever get that Lost Island campaign started?)

Edit: Maraxle beat me.

One word sums it all up... "Hodor!" :p

There is a statistically significant percentage of gamers that reside in the midwest. This was one of the reasons why TSR was successful during its beginnings. :)

EDIT: Stupid send button ...

Well, I'm almost in Los Angeles... I live in north Orange County. I used to live three minutes from Long Beach (the LA County border). Now it's about ten minutes away since our move (assuming decent freeway speeds).

So, I guess I'm part of the statistical sample you're looking for... and I hope you know who I am. ;)
