Geomancer/Dragon Disciple

I'm thinking about doing a PC who will be taking levels in Dragon Disciple and Geomancer.

While Half-Dragon as a race is the obvious choice, it may not be open to me. The GM has a penchant for limiting PC races to the Core races.

As for arms & armor, I'm planning on Spiked Scale Mail and a Greatspear, spiked gauntlets...possibly IUC.

I'm seeking advice in the following areas:

1) Is there a writeup for a priesthood of Bahamut, Tiamat or any other draconic diety? If so, where?

2) Which would you think is the better Divine spellcaster class for this combo: Cleric or Druid?

3) Dragon Disciple requires the ability to cast arcane magic without preparing spells ahead of time. Do you think that a Wizard or Specialist Mage with the Spell Mastery feat qualifies?

4) If your answer to 3 is yes, would you go the route of the Wizard or Specialist, or would you go with the default Sorcerer class?

Thanks in advance!

1) Draconomicom / Deities and Demigods

2) IMO: Cleric

3) No. Spell Mastery does not give the wizard the ability to avoid preparing spells. It allows him to prepare some spells without a spellbook.

4) Go sorcerer. You only need 1 level.

Good luck and have fun.

Have you checked with your DM first, before you spend a lot of time on this? If your DM limits races to core only, the Dragon Disciple breaks that.

Not necessarily. Many GM who balk at a +3 LA race will let the PC pay 10 levels for it. That having been said, yeah, check with your GM.

Also, since you're planning on spending 10 levels on a nonspellcasting Prc, where does Geomancer figure into the character concept? I'm having trouble picturing his class layout, or party role.

Keep in mind a Half-Dragon cannot qualify for the Dragon Disciple prestige class.

Thematically, the Druid seems to fit the Geomancer.

Yeah, I just noticed that, Krafen- but thanks for the heads-up!

Well, right now, the concept is 4-6 levels each of the base classes (Cl or Dr/Sorc) plus 4-6 levels of each PrCl. While the Dragon Disciple doesn't add +1lvl spellcasting class like the Geomancer, it still does add bonus spells as if from an ability bonus. Plus, the lightning bolt breath will help me fufill my King Ghidora dreams!

As for Geomancer, (unless it has changed in 3.5- someone has borrowed my Complete Arcane book) it allows the PC to mix attributes of arcane and divine spellcasting, including casting certain arcane spells in armor or (if one of the base classes is Cleric) spontaneous casting.

Party Role- given the likely armor choice (Spiked Scale Armor) and Weapon (Greatspear), this is a 2nd line fighter, second tier spellslinger with Medium armor and lots of flexibility. The armor/weapon combo means that he'll threaten all of his adjacent spaces and all the spaces 5' away.

If the PC is a Cleric of Bahamut, the Domains of Air, Good, Luck, and Protection means he'll probably be more of a buffer, divinely speaking. Sorcery spells would likely be taken largely from Evocation and Transmutation, with a smattering of Conjuration, Illusion, and Divination.

Spells likely to be used by this PC - Silence, Lightning Bolt (possibly Innate), Color Spray, Shocking Grasp, Fly, Greater Magic Weapon, Acid Arrow, Burning Hands, True Strike, Flaming Sphere, and some of the Orb spells.

Feats under consideration- Improved Unarmed Combat, Combat Casting, Skill Focus (Concentration), XWP Greatspear, Still Spell, Silent Spell, Innate Spell (possibly taken more than once), Energy Substitution, Energy Admixture, Natural Spell (if Druid levels are taken). Any spells made innate or with substituted/mixed energies would be electrical.
