German publisher of D&D 4E won't renew contract

And a translation of Anima. It´ll be really interesting to see how those will do. I love what Ulisses is doing with DSA, but frankly, sometimes i find their choice of RPGs to develop further a little odd. Trying to establish Pathfinder when even D&D is a hard sell? Time will tell.

Considering that generally Germans are more simulationistic inclined and have a higher tolerance of complex rules than Americans I give Pathfinder a higher success chance than 4E D&D.

But in the end-effect, Pathfinder is still only D&D 3.5 (with some tweaks, making it more like 3.75). So, if 3.0 and 3.5 couldn't really enter the mind of the germans, I doubt that Paizo's D&D-reboot ( :p ) could hamper the position of TDE.
Then again, not that it really does matter nowadays.

Waitaminute... Shemmy, are you german?

Nope, I'm pretty solidly American. I'd read the F&S announcement somewhere else (might have been on Paizo's boards) where a native speaker had translated the original text.

The closest I come to having any link to Germany is that one of my players did live there for a few years as a child. And I had a great uncle who visited Berlin (on the front line with the Red Army in WW2). So yeah, not German. Would love to visit there at some point however.

Thankfully me and my gaming group are not very German when it comes to games.

I think thanks to Das Schwarze Auge and Shadowrun, D&D in Germany doesn't have the role of being the introduction to Roleplaying Games. Maybe it would be better for D&D if it was, but can it even hope to get there?
I guess you're correct about this. I just find it a bit frustrating because I believe D&D could be a much better introduction into the hobby.

With things like the D&D Starter set which serve to build a bridge from board games to roleplaying games the potential for reaching a broader player base is definitely there. I think all it would take would be some clever marketing.

On a different topic, thanks for reminding me about Pathfinder! I'm definitely curious how successful that will turn out to be for Ulisses.

Well, there is also a starter-set for TDE there.

And of course, the elitisim of some TDE players makes it that many younger and new roleplayers believe their prejudice about D&D being only about hack-and-slay and not having anything for roleplaying.
The newer generation does look up to the older one, after all, and most of the old-school TDE players will naturally try to persuade new players to stay away from the american devil-lolipop, D&D.

I wouldn't really say that they are more "simulationistic", but instead that they take gaming (like a lot of things) more "serious" - meaning they have less tolerance for corny things because then it looks "childish", i.e. non-appropriate.

At least that's the impression I got from gaming back home.

Cheers, LT.

That also fits.

Still on some level the game feels more "childish" or "naive" to me. Ah, well, I just have to accept that I am not a TDE player and go on with it. I just hope I'll never have to find a new group... :)
