Gestalt commoners

Gestalt ... Commoner?

The whole point of the Gestalt is to take the best of either class. The Commoner has the worst of everything: a d4 hit die, a wizard's BAB, 2 + Int skill points per level, no special abilities, all bad saves.

If a class is bad at something, the Commoner will be redundant. If a class is good at something - ANYTHING - it will always win over the Commoner.

Save yourself the time. Either don't Gestalt them, and leave them Commoners, or give them class levels in something else. Gestalting the Commoner is a waste of time.

Hey, you could do a gestalt commoner/wizard and choose the proficiency in that one simple weapon the commoner gets to be something the wizard isn't proficient in. Nothing will be able to stop you then! ;)

Commoner/Expert.

High level Commoners gun straight for the Exemplar PrC.

Then they go and farm the Astral Plane or become Johnny Appleseed or perform other amazing feats of supernatural aggriculture.

What would you give them as there second class? C'mon, Commoner/Expert is basically an expert, Commoner/Aristocrat basically an aristocrat, Commoner/Soldier basically a soldier, Commoner/Adept basically an adept, etc, etc.

The Commoner class is a placeholder. It will cause no change in a gestalt class, as I understand it.

The commoner gets one simple weapon proficiency, which some classes may not have, and certain skills which some classes may not have.

But you can probably get a better effect by eliminating the class outright, making people who would have been commoners experts or warriors, and making those who would have been other NPC classes into gestalt NPCs if necessary. It's not a huge jump, and it's roughly in line with the increase gestalt PCs have from regular PCs.

Or just give them all a level in their race's paragon class.

If the cat's got vengeful relatives, that commoner is in trouble. His whole family could be dead in just one round of tiny, pouncy doom.

Well, don't forget that every family member gets an AoO against a tiny creature entering their square. And if one commoner has Combat Reflexes and a decent Dex they might survive.

I am going to be running a gestalt game (from Unearthed Arcana), and I've been wondering, what do I do with the average people in the world? Should I just use the commoner class or gestalt all the people in the world to balance it? This probably won't be important but I thought I'd see what people think.

(In my group) Gestalts are special. PCs, NPC Heroes (elite guards, royal mages, etc) and Major Villains.

Commoners and other mundane NPCs just use non-gestalt NPC or PC classes, depending on what they are. Hell, we'd never actually stat out a commoner. If they get into combat, they run or die.

IMC, I use Expert, Warrior and PC Classes for NPCs.

Only if they're armed. Otherwise... doom creeps in on kitten's paws!
