Getting a full set is unreasonable

I always try to get full sets of the DDM figures. On a tight budget, I try to order cases from sites that offer decent discounts. Why is it that even with buying 3 cases I can not get a full case?!?

Bloodwar I was short by one

Night Below I am short by two.

Unhallowed I bought only two cases and was short by seven.

I know I will get them through trades or e-bay but by buying THREE cases one would think they should get a full set!

Just ranting

are others finding this is the case for them also?
Welcome to the rip-off. By selling these as "collectable" WotC gets folks to fork over a whole lot more money than they would if they could buy the ones they want. In the near future, Reaper will begin selling prepainted minis, NON-collectable. See what you are buying. If it does well, then it will prove WotC was wrong (or lying) when they said that it couldn't be done...

Which would require you showing them saying it couldn't be done. I don't remember any such comment from WotC. I have seen fans respond to comments that WotC was deliberately "ripping us off" by saying if another model would be profitable then why hadn't anyone done so (at least successfully).

They might have stated that something wasn't economical for them to do. However, you'd have to look at the whole picture. If Reaper's miniature line has both the breadth and depth of WotCs miniature line, then it would be a direct comparison. I won't be surprised if it hits the breadth, but would be surprised if it hits the depth. I think you won't see too many of the "oddities" in their plastic miniatures line.

You obviously haven't seen my painting if you think that I'd feel that way. :)
Practice, practice, practice!

Before I started painting minis, the last time I painted anything smaller than a wall was when I built plastic military models as a kid. It was the Wardrums DDM set that gave me inspiration. I looked at the Zakya Rakshasa and Horde Zombie and thought the paint job was lacking and I could do a better job! :p

I already had a couple magnifying devices (lamp & goggles) and just jumped in with both feet. When I get frustrated I went online to check out the work of other people. I'm a half-hour away from the Reaper factory, so I've visited there a couple of times during their paint workshop. I'd sit there and paint while listening to others, and ask questions. You can find a calendar on the Reaper site with stores that host demos and paint sessions. Check it out to see if there's anyone local to you hosting a paint party.

By the way - Reaper is coming out with an Aboleth-like mini next month!

I joke about practice, but for me its choosing time over money. I'd much rather spend some time on the weekends painting, than spending money on cardboard boxes hoping I get what I want. While there are start-up costs with painting your own, it's no different than investing in a case of plastic minis. And once I've spent the money on paints and brushes, I can now buy and create armies of dwarves or lizardmen, something I couldn't do with DDMs. I still buy the singles though - Reaper doesn't have a line of Warforged!

Ah yes, the minis rant. I feel your pain.

I haven't been able to buy cases this time, because I've been paying for my own, my son's, and some of his friends' pre-release and release events. (Of course, since I pay, they give me the minis at the end of the event.)

I traded a ton of old commons and uncommons (and 1 rare) for 8 boosters, I've won a few, and I have a half-case waiting for me to open.

All told, I've opened 23 boosters so far and I'm missing 5 rares. Not bad, really. Of course, there are some rares I want duplicates of (all the Dragons, for instance--good luck, eh?).

Part of the problem is that a lot of people feel they need to collect the whole set -- why bother? Having all 60 figures is rarely necessary for your games.

I've been in DDM since Harbinger, and I've never felt the need to "catch 'em all" -- screw that, I just buy enough to get the key figures I need, mostly uncommons and commons, and buy singles or trade online for the few rares I want. It's also helped what would otherwise be a ridiculously sprawling collection stay (somewhat!) under control, so I can actually FIND all the minis I own.

I'm definitely going to be purchasing some of Reaper's new prepaints, and Rackham, the company that makes Confrontation, is coming out with a whole line of fantasy prepaints as well, also sold in nonrandomized packaging.

I was wondering if WotC explained why the price of boosters went up from 9.99 to 14.99. I will say at $9.99 it was a good deal, I think about $1.25 a figure...but now there at almost $2.00 a figure(that ain't so hot for random minis in my book). Just wondering if there was ever an explanation given for the increase, and will they be going up anymore?

Hey, Wotc's Collectable Card Game Magic is what gave them the boatload of money that let them buy D&D in the first place. Why wouldn't they continue with a successful business model so long as there are customers that want to collect?

I am not one of those. I sometimes get a miniature that looks like my character - but our DM just has a big "lot" of them, and usually the medium sized bad guys we face look like plastic orcs, no master what they are.
