Getting Faster?

Twin Rose

First Post
I've been using benchmarks, and optimizing code and PHP settings as much as I can to try and improve the speed of EN World. Is anyone noticing a different? It's taking a lot of work, but I think it's really improving. (Let me know if you are not having this experience!)

It's a little better for me, but still not great.

The store is showing a range (including download time) of 5.937 seconds to 9.077 seconds on the front page, with all those covers and eveyrthing.

(Running a benchmark now of forums.php)
.658 seconds through 4.338 seconds.

(For reading this post)
1.291 seconds through 5.916 seconds.

When I first started running this, many were up over 10 seconds consistantly.

Now, any latency that takes place between an individual user and EN World can't be accounted for. Also, if we have too many users on, then we start getting into swap memory. I'm thinking we need to buy another 512 meg or so for the box (at todays prices, that's not a big deal I think) and that should cut down on the 'high range' load times considerably. (The high range is, presumably, when a bottleneck occurs that causes it to go to the swap).

I expect we'll get MUCH faster after that. (ie, stay in the 'low end range').

Making that post, it went faster than I expected, actually. :heh: Every once in a while, a page will take a little longer to load, but I am now noticing faster load times (not quite a second or less, but 3-4 seconds).

As I said, I expect the 'faster ones' are when the memory gets taken to the swap file (hard drive) which can be as much as 10 times slower than RAM.

faster yes, and noticeably so, but not quite what i'd call fast yet.
