What I'd like to see is a HeroQuest or Warhammer Quest style of game from WotC. Make it D&D based and let the buyers know that this is a beginner's version of a MUCH bigger game. This should be sold in stores like Target and Wal-Mart to attract a larger crowd than merely in game stores where possible new players may not frequent. With the new miniatures line coming out, now would be the best time for such a product. Hey, it got me and most of my gaming group into the hobby in the first place (HeroQuest), so I would expect it to work for others as well.
Another idea would be a Mutant and Masterminds tie-in with all the comic book movies coming out. I know a lot of people in my area that turn their noses up at Pen and Paper RPG's, but would love to play in an X-Men game. When they are having a good time, that's when they get levelled with the realization that they are playing an RPG and it opens the doors to even more games.
The long and short of it is that this hobby needs to get mainstream appeal rather than staying in the fringes. RPG's still have that super-geeky stigma, and until it's revamped some, this hobby will continue to stay in the fringes while games like MageKnight and Yu-GI-Oh get all the glory.
