Getting rid of Milestones.

I hate Milestones. They cause unnecesary accounting and are very seldom given out. They are a lot of bother for DMs and an irritating handicap for players.

I have a simple and easy fix to getting rid of Milestones:

1. Action Points refresh at the start of every encounter.

2. Action Points may also be used to activate a Magic Item Daily Power a second time between extended rests but not the same power twice.

3. Action Point use replace Milestones for certain magic item properties such as those in magic rings.

I have all those changes in my house-rules as well. With the exception that the points are refreshed by a short rest.

However, I've also altered other rules to compensate for the imbalance of having an action point for every encounter. It really is a significant power boost for players that shouldn't be underestimated.

The suggestion I like was freeing them up and use something closer to the normal definition of "milestone" and using in story elements to determine them ie the GM can decide when a milestone occurs, it becomes a no muss no fuss or extra documentation, if significant in story events seem to occur very often cool.. if they arent happening frequently enough for how you like the pacing ... adjust what you consider significant ;-), discovering new places might be a milestone for instance, it doesnt have to be saving the princess.

I think handig out one action point per encounter can work. Let players accumulate them, and spend them either for extra actions, or for item dailies. Still only one extra action/scene.

As an alternative, have everyone start with 3 ap after a long rest, gain 2 ap per encounter. An additional action costs 2 ap, an item daily costs 1 ap.

We do:
  • 1 AP per encounter.
  • Magic items that have "after milestone" effects and recharges kick in after the third encounter in a day.

I canot say I see milestones as an issue. Might I ask why people feel they are so? You rarely get adventuring days that have three encounters?

[EDIT]

You know what, you asked a question, I answered a completely different question, and now you have me looking back to figure out exactly why we DID change milestones...
