The CGI thing may be about doing physically impossible things and fighting great, horrid monsters as much as it is about the vanity of the stars. Murry, for example, did not undergo a great deal of make up in his last two movies - at least nothing to make him appear to be years younger than he really is.

Given how well they un-aged Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan in X3, I'm pretty sure a sufficiently motivated studio could de-age the relevant actors for a live-action G3 if they really wanted to.

Obvious answer of course being that they don't want to...
