Actually, squid researchers have tried making calamari out of giant squid, and reported that it tasted terrible. Too much ammonia in the flesh, now theorized to help the huge creature remain buoyant.

I think it only qualifies as a dire squid. but make sure you read this part of the text. Pay attention to last bit underlined.

...Measuring 18 feet (5.5 meters) long, analysis of the tentacle confirmed it came from a giant squid and allowed the researchers to estimate the total length of the animal.

But the researchers caution that their data assume the tentacle was severed at its base. If not, the squid may have been considerably larger. The longest giant squid on record measured 59 feet (18 meters), including its two elongated tentacles.

Huh. I'd heard of Mesonychoteuthis, but I hadn't heard that they were rumored to get bigger than the Architeuthis. Still, from the article, it doesn't look like they do - Mesonychoteuthis is more robust with larger eyes and beak compared to its body size.

And now I know...

Oh, and Architeuthis is neither a dire squid or a kraken. Giant squid are right there in the MM, under animal. Huge size, 12 HD, IIRC.
