I'm trying to write a book - fantasy novel, parallel universe. There's a great character. He's a captain of a ship. He's not a pirate, but whenever I try and write ANYTHING about him, Jack Sparrow just pops up in my head and obliterates anything original in him. It's so annoying! Sparrow's so cool he just beats my captain into the ground![]()
Easiest solution is to make him (her?) the anti-Sparrow. Aristocratic, prim, methodical, disciplined, and cultured. The name of his ship is a classical allusion. Rather than rum, he probably buys his crew a barrel of a different fine brandy each voyage, to educate them on the nuances of quality spirits. He has studied under seven different renowned fencing masters, and fights like an elegant, poised mincing machine. He invites his respected enemies over for port and cigars, and is impeccably polite to the ladies. You get the idea...
