Giants in the Earth discussion: Jack Sparrow and Pirates of the Carribean

Pfft. What's with the Norrington hate? He went from LN (Good tendancies) to LN (Evil tendencies) at worst. He wasn't cruel, he had to be prodded to be vindictive (Good bluff check Jack), and the only people he betrayed were those that had destroyed his life, so who betrayed who, really?

Although it's worth noting that a Captain-of-the-List, which Norrington certainly was, couldn't actually lose his commision in the British Navy in that era. The worst that could have happened to him would've been getting beached on half-pay. Which would have supported him in more style than he appeared to be enjoying. And promotions for Captains of the list were strictly based on time in grade, so he would inevitably have made admiral whether serving at sea or not.

So clearly that little detail changes from IRL to Piratesverse along with Aztec gods, Krakens, undead monkies, and smokin hot voodoo chicks.

I think Gov. Swann mentioned that he had resigned his comission.

What's with all the "Neutral" Sparrows? Jack not only sold the soul of his only true friend to Davy Jones, he agreed and proceeded to obtain 99 other souls to settle his debt to Davy Jones. He may be charismatic and all, but Jack was pretty Evil by D&D terms.

I think in Jack's case, we see some of the problems with alignment ... In some points, he seems NE, while in others he seems NG .. I would rate him as CN myself .. I think it fits the closest.

Not to open up an alignment can o'worms, but if he acts NG sometimes and NE about as much, then he's N not CN. He needs some sort of chaotic behavior (alignment-wise) to move that way on the graph. Just being morally inconsistent isn't chaotic behavior.

And could've been lying. He was exploring his options in Tortuga.

Sending Will to give up his soul instead of Jack's was pretty clearly evil, especially since Will is what passes for a friend in Jack's world.

Jack's CE or NE with a high charisma. Happens all the time in real life.

He specifically went to Tortuga to find 99 hapless souls to give to Davy Jones. And even if he wasn't, he was pretty comfortable with leaving Will to Jones.

No, he's Evil. I'm trying to find one instance in both movies so far where he does something truly Good, but I'm coming up short.

When he went back to the Pearl as it was fighting the Kraken. That was his one Good act, which of course led to Beths first Evil act and his heroic death. As had all been foreshadowed. :D

Of course, a lot of Jack's actions in Pirates 1 could be construed as evil too, but we get to see his schemes unfold according to his designs. In Pirates 2, we never got to see his endgame plan.
